I am going to be a hs senior this year and I have mediocre/not so good grades and SATs. I am very interested in Tisch/Cap21. I realize that grades are nowhere near NYU’s standards. Will they look past that because I am an intended musical theater major? Is your admission solely based on your audition, like it is for conservatories? I don’t understand why grades and scores are issues when one has alot of talent.

The academic and artistic reviews are equally weighted at Tisch. There are many college MT programs where academics are not as important a factor in the admissions process. However, at Tisch, your academic stats are going to be important. They will not "look past that" if you are not in the academic 'ballpark' for NYU.

shinexxon - Like alwaysamom says, academics and artistic review weigh equally heavy at NYU, unlike for example at CMU or CCM. I am not sure what how mediocre your grades and SAT's are, but you do say that they are no where near NYU's standards, which really puts you at a disadvantage. Also, be aware that there is a lot of talent out there.

I would venture that if NYU has a choice between two equally talented students, but one has significally higher grades and test scores, they will be inclined to offer admission to this person. We just went through this process and have seen some really talented kids with below par grades unfortunately get denied admission.

So, what to do then, you may ask? I'd recommend that you try to possibly look into re-taking the SAT's this fall and work hard on getting your grades up. Having a better SAT score, and an upward trend gradewise may help admissions look at your application more favorably, so that, when you ace your artistic review, you would be a more likely candidate for admission.

Probably needless to say however, every year tons of talented kids with great grades get turned down everywhere because there are only so many slots. Don't underestimate this process. There is a ton of info on this forum that you may want to read through.

Good luck!

I have a similar question. I have pretty good grades (3.71 gpa and average or above avg. sat/act scores) but still not exeptional. I am wondering if you have to be admitted into the school before you can audition for the mt program in tisch, or if you just apply for everything all at once. Thanks!!!

ballerinabeyler - no, you just apply for everything at once :). After your artistic review, the combination of both your academics and artistic review scores will lead to a Yes or No. BTW - it looks like you are fine candidate academically :D!

I had a similar question...and I'm totally bumping this...if I have pretty good SATS scores and a 3.4 unweighted GPA that I can bump by the end of the year (still a junior), am I completely out of the ball park academically??

jake - I am not sure that I fully understand what you mean by being "completely out of the ballpark academically", but I am guessing you actually mean that you are within the academic average NYU is looking for :).

It looks as if with a good SAT (+1800) and GPA (+3.4) scores you do fit NYU's academic profile. However, remember that for admission to Tisch your artistic review will count heavily, and also be aware that NYU receives an ever increasing amount of applications. So, as a rule of thumb, the better your scores, the bigger your chance for (academic) admission :D.
