HS Junior Wanting to Apply to Colleges Now!

Hi there guys,

I’m currently a junior attending a competitive high school in NY. Interested in dentistry for the future and looking to major in psychology in college. I would like to apply to colleges for spring 2019 and was wondering if there were colleges in the NY area that have room for any applicants. In particular, I am most interested in the CUNY/SUNY schools and have found some information on the CUNY website stating that “The Spring 2019 Admission Application will be available on June 1st, 2018.” Is it a bit too late or is it still possible to do so?

My stats:
GPA: 87
Several honors classes
2 APs (so far)
Several college classes (all A’s)
No class ranking
SAT: 1460/1600

Extracurriculars:
Worked in a daycare (One summer)
Worked retail (One year)
Tutored a kid (Two years)
Red Cross (All years)
Engineering Team (One year)
Science Olympiad (One year)
Pre-Med Club (Two years)
No leadership positions.

Recs: I’m planning to not submit any recs

Would this be enough for getting into colleges like Hunter, Queens, City, or Brooklyn?

Thank you so much in advance!

Just go to college in fall 2019. You’ll have a better experience.

@sybbie719 is a NY expert and may have ideas for you.

What does your guidance counselor advise? Will you be able to graduate high school at the end of the first semester, or would you just be leaving without a diploma? If you don’t graduate, you won’t be eligible to file the FAFSA unless you pass the GED exam series or meet NY state requirements for high school equivalency.

Yes, there surely will be spaces in the CUNY/SUNY system for second semester enrollment. Check the websites of each of them to find out what the requirements and application dates are.

Why the rush to graduate? I see that you are at a specialized high school.

Are you on track to graduate with the school’s diploma (The Stuyvesant, the Bronx Science the Brooklyn tech diploma) or will you just get a regents diploma?

How does your school program? Will they program you for English 7 and English 8 in the fall? Will they program you for Government and Economics in the fall and then one PE class/

What is the rush to graduate? Surely you have not exhausted the most rigorous curriculum that your school offers. You can continue to take College Now classes this summer (Hunter’s College Now deadline is Friday, City is offering a 6 credit architecture course, deadline soon). You can take College Now in the fall and the spring

I see from your previous posts that you are wondering if you are eligible for HEOP

Look at the income guidelines for EOP/HEOP (you probably wont get into SUNY EOP, but you can definitely toss an application at HEOP (which you won’t get if you apply during the spring term). Toss applications at Cornell, Columbia, NYU HEOP (Which looks at high numbers).

Keep in mind if you get picked up for EOP/HEOP and graduate in the program, you will get free tuition at Stony Brook or UB, which both have dental schools through the graduate opportunity program. This could be a huge cost savings

You may get some scholarship money at some of the SUNYs

You could also toss an application at Questbridge.

If you need money, it is not to your advantage to graduate early… Relax, enjoy senior year and search out the $$
