Good luck to everyone! Hopefully we will find out about HSHSP acceptances soon and fingers crossed for all those that applied! I know they have to turn down most applicants since there are so many amazing students out there.
This process has been brutally humbling for me, as I am sure it has been for many, but I have slowly realized I am not defined by the programs that accept me. I have poured my heart into my classes, research, volunteering and summer applications but must be missing something they are looking for. I have been accepted to everything I applied to… before this summer.
Rejections will only make my resolve to study/research my passions stronger and make me want to find even better ways to do that. I have come up with ideas for doing something exceptional and fun this summer, and my senior year, whether I am accepted or rejected from the programs I applied to. So far, I have been rejected by everyone I applied with and HSHSP is the last. Whatever the outcome from HSHSP, if you have ideas or want to partner with me on some options for research, please let me know! We are better together!
My teacher said we learn a little from opportunities but we learn the most from failure. I guess I am learning the most this year! He also told me we only fail when we accept rejections/limitations and stop trying to find and do something better.
For all those rejected from summer programs - welcome, you are joining me in the majorly. For all those accepted, congratulations - I am sure you worked hard and deserve the opportunity! Now let’s all do great things!
P.S. - If anyone would be willing to let me know how I can be better prepared for this and future opportunities, please let me know if you can help me! I am so impressed by the accomplishments I have read about from other applicants on the summer program message boards. I live in a small city and there are things you all have done that I never heard of!
Again, my best wishes for all that applied to HSHSP, I hope you get in!
I’m waiting on this, but got into SSTP (iowa). payment is due today/tom, should I wait for hshsp or just pay for sstp, 1/4 of the like $6500 is nonrefundable.
@johnjohn2019 I’m in the same situation as you. I ended up just paying the deposit for SSTP today (I’m pretty sure the deadline is today) because it’s better to be safe than sorry I guess. And tbh if you’re worried about wasting money, I’d say that it’s not too bad because giving up the deposit for SSTP and attending HSHSP if you get in is still cheaper than going to SSTP.
@johnjohn2019 & @awang1102 that’s a lot of money to swallow. But I think you did the right thing. With only 24 HSHSP spots, odds are none of us will get in. You don’t want to be left with NOTHING for this summer.
Since rejections are going out, I bet the top 24 have already been accepted/notified. And now, Dr. Richmond is slowly sending out rejections (she must have hundreds of rejection emails to send.)
@curiousme2 Yes I got rejected from HSHSP. To be honest I don’t know why I was so shook about it (since it was almost expected) but I am sure there are still other great things coming in the future
She may be doing it based on order of applications received, so acceptances and rejections are probably not gonna be like grouped together. I remember last year it was a rolling acceptance basis, and some acceptances were dished out pretty late (along with rejects)
@curiousme2 I received the confirmation email 2/28. It seems like they valued the essays a lot more than academic achievements as they had no spot to fill in.
Does anyone wanna say what they did for their essays?
I wrote my interest essay on structural and molecular biology along with my experiences in my AP Biology class. Book essay was on Gifted Hands and perseverance.
