HSS. Also: "Ethics, History, and Public Policy"

So, how is this HSS school anyway? I got in but I really don't know that too much about it. From just the most basic look, so far it looks kind of whack. Carnegie Mellon itself seems to be a "top school," but to me that seems for the technology related stuff. Their liberal arts seems very average to me. It also seems to be very much in the shadow of the other stuff.

Or am I wrong? Are they just as good as some of the other top liberal arts schools in this respect? How are the professors? Do you feel inferior to engineering etc. students? Information from current students would be nice.

Also, what do you think of the "Ethics, History, and Public Policy" program? This major interests me because it seems to be my 3 favorite fields wrapped up into one, but I really can't find much info on it. Is anyone in it right now? How is it?

Hopefully I will get into UChicago and none of this will matter to me.

I thought the same way, but apparently the writing part of the Humanities school is excellent.

I am attending HSS for Economics. I picked Carnegie because it is strong in Business as an undergraduate school but I could still have a liberal arts flavor to my degree. I come from a high school that really promotes Ivies and LACs.

I do hope there isn't an "attitude" with the engineering majors and CS majors. I was hoping the school was at a level where people respected everyones major and the role they will play in life, whether its psycology, religion, engineering, history, acting, music, etc. I would like to hear from current students on the atmosphere of the campus in that respect.

Ok, the writing is good, I've heard that. But what about other stuff? LIke Philosophy or Political Science?

charles, there are always going to be a bit of contempt between the humanities guys and the techie guys. Come on, it's all in good fun.

I don't know what it's like at Carnegie-Mellon though.

The Creative Writing program is one of the oldest undergraduate programs. The program is said to require "intense committment" and it is made excellent by the core of the curriculum, the writing workshop. In my opinion, the writing programs (Creative, Professional, Technical) and Economics are the best aspects of the humanities school.
