My advisor told me that if you're in HSS, you must take at least 45 units a year in order to graduate on time (4 years). So, I am saddled with 3 sciences, an english, the frosh seminar, and computing skills workshop (50 units). I was wondering if anyone else was taking a full courseload, and if you are - why? I want to drop one of my courses as 1st semester is a major transitional period etc. blah blah blah. Advice and hating are both welcome. :)

Well, we are going to CMU. I have 50 units, but my classes aren't that bad and my workload is insignificant compared to some people, even within our college of HSS. My roommate has 55 units (the actual full load amount of max units) and 1280 minutes of classes, all of which are a lot harder than mine.

I'm not trying to scare you though. I would just try not to worry and be happy that you don't have it that badly. And everyone else will be in the same position as you, including me. None of us know how hard our workload will be and all of us are worrying about the challenge of confronting it while undergoing a transitional period. So no matter what happens, you at least have company.

In your mind, don't count CSW as a class. It's a place you go for an hour or two a week, and it produces no homework. Often people skip it. Now you only have 5 classes!

If you want to take it easy first semester, you'll have to resign yourself to taking a larger-than-normal course load during a couple of other semesters. I, for example, took a 36-unit first semester (not counting CSW or freshman seminar) and then a 54-unit second semester without a drop in grades. My next semester is set to be 57 units; I'm still paying for the slacker first semester. But it's actually working out quite well for me.

I'm a CS major, by the way, but I'd guess the same idea applies to H&SS.

I have 53 units
