number of units so far

hi!

could you tell me how many units you have completed so far (indicate year plz) and how many you expect to complete upon graduation. thanks.

I think I have done around 104 - I'm in the class of 2010. I haven't planned on completing a specific number of units before graduation - you need 360 to graduate (at least from hss anyway). I guess I'll probably have around 400 units when I graduate - but I am thinking of double majoring and/or going for an accelerated grad program (extra year) so that could increase.

I'm class of 2009, and I have 289 units (came in with 80ish units through AP). I'll probably take an average of 45-50 units for the next 4 semesters, so I guess I'll graduate with around 480. Getting enough units to graduate isn't hard at all; 360 gives you an average of 45/semester, which is lower than what most CS majors ever take, except possibly the semester when they take OS. Minimum units for fulltime status is 36.

I think it should also be mentioned that CMU counts units a bit differently than other schools (most of my friends at other colleges avg. 15-17 units....).

Units are supposed to indicate how many hours a week you will spend on said course. But... I think they lie (for instance... Concept Mathematics is only 9 units. I think most would say they spend a lot more time than that on it)

I think if you divide by 3, that's about how many units cmu courses would equal at other universities.

But many people also spend less than 9 hours a week on cognitive psychology and interp. It usually balances out; a normal course is 9 or 12 units; calculus is 10, for instance.

Dividing by 3 is the best way to convert units -> credit hours.

I'm '11 and i'll be coming in with somewhere between 47 and 85

I am at CMU for pre-college, and asked Mark Stehlik about the OS thing. He said it was primarily because students tend to procrastinate. Could anyone verify this claim. (but there is also a factor that OS is the kind of thing where great isn't good enough)

Procrastination is a problem with OS (or any class)- I know someone who didn't do anything for the first 2 or 3 weeks of the class and spent the whole semester behind on everything they were supposed to do. I also know people who had problems because they had poor communication with their partners. That said, it's still a remarkably time consuming class- it seems as though most people I know were spending at least 3 hrs/day a day, 5 days a week coding outside of class, and there's more to the class than just writing code.

I heard that someone in SCS finished the OS project in 5 days, could anyone justify this claim? thanks

Yes, there is a guy who says he thought about his project for a week or two, then coded it in 3 or 4 days, and I don't think it's completely impossible - he's a very strong and talented student. Keep in mind though - that's one person out of the 500+ current undergrads at CMU - most people work hard throughout the semester and don't do as well as he did in the class.
