Human Biology and Society Major

Just saw this, but it's a little old. The Daily Bruin :: Planned human biology and society major straddles the divide between North and South Campus

How soon will this major be available? It sounds really interesting. Does anyone have any more information about this major? Particularly regarding how you can choose whether to pursue a B.S. or B.A. degree in this major.

I’m interested in this also. I believe it is available already since someone I know said this was his major…

Are you a student already? Go talk to a counselor and they can give you all the info. I know that’s not too helpful advice, but no one on this board probably has any info since this is still a very new and just recently approved major.

I know they’re only going to take 10 applicants for the BS degree next quarter/next year (something like this, don’t remember the exact timeframe). This is what one of the counselors said.

You’ll be able to switch (or apply) to be in this major starting from Fall 2011. [Degree Programs – The UCLA Center for Society and Genetics](http://socgen.ucla.edu/academics/programs/)

So is it a competitive major to get into? I’m an incoming freshman, admitted as a biochemistry major but I’ve always been torn between sociology and biology/biochem so this really seems like something I’d want to do.

Quote: When preparatory coursework is done, premajors apply to the major program. Application is highly competitive and includes a personal statement of interest. Completion of course requirements alone is no guarantee of admission to the major.
