@ChasingMerit, congratulations on your decision. I was at Stanford decades ago, but the humanities and social sciences were always strong. I double majored in Comparative Literature and Mathematical Sciences, did a co-terminal MA in Linguistics, and spent a year in Paris and Berlin. I also lived in the Maison Francaise. In my time the humanities were certainly not looked down on, and I doubt they are today, despite some reports. There will be plenty of opportunities for you. Good luck!
@fragbot When I met many parents at various Stanford receptions recently, I was also surprised that many to-be-students at Stanford were going to study either AI, pre-med or biology something. I did find several students who were going to study IR, Urban Studies etc. I agree with an argument that the decrease in pure Humanities majors such as English Lit, Classics and History is reflects a general trend and is happening across the board. After all,
@ChasingMerit Your observations are similar to what I personally observed by talking to students and attending events during the Admit Weekend. Same thing with my kid who will be taking a gap year and join Class of 2022. One thing I did notice though is many tech-oriented prospective students tend to gather around some topics of technology and get all excited, so that non-tech prospective students don’t have much to say and can feel excluded.
