SPOP is coming up in a couple of weeks and to stay ahead of the game, I've been doing some research on which classes and professors I should take/consider during registration. Even though I'm not CHP and don't plan on applying for CHP next year, Humanities Core looks like a really interesting series that could potentially save a lot of time for me if I complete it. But I've heard that it's really challenging and difficult and a possible GPA killer which really, really worries me considering that I plan on applying to medical school and CANNOT dip below a 3.75. I do really love English and the humanities and if possible, would like to minor in English, but is it really worth the time and stress? I'd still like to have fun my freshman year in college!

Hmmm, well, if your major is Bio or something, I feel like you should work on that. I have a friend who’s premed and an english minor (at a diff. school) and she took most of her writing classes during sophomore year. Although, I don’t know how UCI’s english minor/series works. I’d say be prepared to enroll into summer session for 2012, since that could help you get some classes (chem/bio/physics/math) out of the way and put in some writing classes (or Bio classes if you take writing ones in the summer instead).

I am in the same boat as you. I want to get ahead and knock off some GEs but afraid that by doing so, I will kill my GPA. Have you decided?

@hoamai- Thanks! I’ll probably have to take summer classes anyways so I can learn enough stuff in time for the MCAT so I’ll keep that in mind!

@frenchfries11- I’m gonna do it! I got my AP scores back and got a 5 in AP Lit, which makes me feel like I’m prepared and good enough to work on Humanities Core. I want to minor in English anyways (maybe even double major) so it’d be good. Some kids who took HumCore knocked out so many GEs that they’re taking only 12 units a quarter their sophomore year!

I plan on taking the premed route so don’t plan to take humanities. Do you think it would be a stretch to graduate within 4 years?

@frenchfries11- Graduating in 4 years for you or for me? For you, if you’re not planning on minoring or double majoring, you should be fine as long as you don’t slack off. But for me, I know that I will have to take summer courses to get all of my shizz done. Which is why I want to take HumCore, since I can get more done in a condensed amount of time. Also, I’m really interested in the humanities and if it were completely up to me, I would have majored in English.

Okay thanks.
