As a prospective English and history double major, I think it would be very helpful to include a sub-topic under “majors” for English majors, history majors, foreign language majors, etc., or at least sub-topics for humanities and/or social sciences majors. I think that these majors are often overlooked, especially by people on CC, and it’s hard to find a network of like-minded students (in terms of their majors). It’s not very welcoming for humanities majors to have to sift through the “other majors” sub-topic threads to find information…
Just a thought, let me know what you all think, if you’re interested.
I too plan on double majoring in English and history! I find this an excellent idea.
I like this idea - I’m planning on double majoring + minoring, all in humanities!
Sorry for the long delay in replying to this one. If you could add, say, two more sub-topics, which would they be? English? History? Or Humanities? We probably wouldn’t want to add too many more since it could make the area a bit too congested. Thanks!
I’d like to hear opinions from other members, but I would probably choose Humanities (as there will probably be a lot of overlap between, say, English and history). Maybe a separate Political Science section would be useful as well. Thank you so much!
Sure, we can get more input from others on this. The current list is quite STEM- and performing arts-heavy.
@marianna221b and @irlandaise Do you have any input on this?
Yes, I agree with a separate PolySci section and grouping English/History. Also, I’d say a language/culture studies section would be useful if it were separate from the Humanities.
I’d say one for Foreign Language/Culture Studies Majors and a Humanities Majors. However… if it were feasible to completely redesign the majors categories (which I realize it likely is not), I would combine Music, Dance, Musical Theater, Theater and Drama, Visual Arts and Film into one category. I think it is taking up a disproportionate amount of space.
If that were feasible, it would leave more room for humanities, making it possible to do a Foreign Language/Culture Studies, Social Sciences (which would include PolySci, Psych, etc. Also, Journalism could be moved there. Currently it has 18 pages as opposed to Engineering’s 250. Does it really warrant its own category in this day and age?). There could be one more for English Language/Literature/Writing, one for History/Philosophy/and-maybe-Religion. That’s how I’d see it best, as I think that would cover generally everything without leaving popular majors out.
^ Ooh, I like the idea of having a Social Science majors forum and a Humanities majors forum (which is more appropriate for history?)
Not sure of the history behind the dominance of the performing arts majors in the community, though we can look at traffic for each of these to see how active they have been. Please note that some of the majors were added at a later date, so they may have fewer pages due to that factor.
I can also get some input from our moderators as well. Thanks for the feedback thus far!
I just noticed the two new subforums - thank you so much, @Lenitus and other mods who set those up! I wasn’t expecting any sort of official response to this thread, so I was pleasantly surprised. You guys rock!
Thanks a lot…I apologize for not following up here with some links to the new forums. We are still considering a Social Sciences forum as well. There may longer-term plans for a larger re-structuring of that section, but I hope the new forums will suffice for now
