Humanities or English? Both?

Hello! So, next year, my senior year, I’m debating between taking DE Humanities 2 or AP English as my English. I’m currently in DE Humanities 1 and absolutely love it, so I really want to take DE Humanities 2 next year. However, I do think that AP English would look better for college apps. A few people I know have actually taken both, and I’m just wondering how this would look to college admissions? Do Humanities and English look like two different courses or are they the same thing? Would I be better off taking only one or both, and if just taking one would be best, which class?

It depends on your attributes as a student. Are you sure you can handle AP English? A lot of people write it off as a weak AP but it’s pretty tough. Certainly had a harder time in it than Calculus. As for which is better, I’m not sure what DE is or what colleges prefer, but honestly, I’d say that unless you want to go to a super selective school, take classes you enjoy and get good grades.

But answer these questions to yourself and see if you should take it:
What does your schedule look like? What colleges do you want to go to? Do you meet the requirements? Do you have a good-great chance at getting in?

I love English and I’m a good writer, plus I’m willing to put in the effort, so I think I could definitely manage AP English (especially at my school). DE is Dual Enrollment, which is essentially a less impressive version of AP, kind of like Honors but with college credit. Selective colleges definitely prefer APs. I want to apply to fairly prestigious universities and some Ivy Leagues (UChicago, Barnard, McGill, NYU, etc.) My schedule is most likely going to have about 3-5 other APs.

Well, if you think you can handle both, and would equally enjoy both, take them both if you can. Also, yeah, dual enrollment is not as great as AP (I don’t know how I didn’t realize DE was dual enrollment). I think with a level head and some organization skills, you should do both, but if you aren’t able to due to some restriction, then definitely go AP English. It does look better.
