Greetings from Las Vegas. I'm entering my second year of college and I'm majoring in chemistry.

I want to transfer to a school in California that isn't terribly difficult to get into (I understand that my being a non-resident puts me at a disadvantage for admission into the UC schools) but still maintains a reputable science department.

Until the other day, I've never even heard of the school. But from what I've researched so far, it seems pretty decent. Not crazy about the hippy reputation, but I'm sure that's a bit of an overstatement. Sort of like when people think all UNLV students are nothing more than gambleholics who major in Blackjack Dealing.

Any opinions on Humboldt? Also, can anyone recommend other schools?

I have a number of friends who go there. They do alot of great research in environmental studies and forestry. My biology teacher went there and then worked in UCLA's lab.

I might recommend UC Merced. It is still very small and in a boring town close to where I live, but they are growing and have a great relationship with Yosemite National Park. Our high school does joint projects with the UC Merced's research department that is based in Yosemite.

Maybe also look at UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, CSU Monteray, and Cal Poly Pomona.

My friend goes to Humboldt and he's thinking of transfering out after next year. I'm not sure about the hippy thing but there is definitely a LOT of pot around. He says there's NOTHING to do there and that's why so many people smoke weed.

S just graduated from Humboldt and found PLENTY to do AND not smoke weed. Science classes are in high demand and probably the most difficult to get into. Since you are from NV you might check out the Western Undergraduate Exchange (wue.wiche.edu) which will list schools you can go to for 150% instate tuition. I think you understand well enough about rumored reputations of schools and comments from disgruntled friends.
