Humboldt State

Hello all! I was wondering if anyone could give me any information besides all of the stuff on the Humboldt state website. This is one of my safety schools, and after looking at everything--the pictures, the cd they sent me with all sorts of stuff etc--I know that this is my kind of school! (Thanks to whoever recommended it to me, I can't quite recall). But yeah, any information on what it's like, the campus, the people, the town, the academics would be awesome! Basically any experience or tid bits you know about the university! Muchly appreciated peoples!

I haven't been up to the Humboldt State area in years, but it definitely had a crunchy, hippie feel to it. One of the smaller CSUs. The region is beautiful, a fair amount of rain, very green. The town of Arcata is pretty depressed economically and there aren't any cities nearby, so I imagine students mostly stay on campus. I sort-of looked into it when I instead went to SDSU (bad decision!) and I think Humboldt would have been a better choice for the smaller size. If you like Humboldt, you might also look into UCSC - definitely one of the most beautiful campuses in the country and Santa Cruz is a fun town, San Francisco is not far away, etc.

Thanks sushi! Santa Cruz is in fact on my match list, that's where I want to go the most :) Humboldt just seems very much like an appropriate school for that same vibe, although Santa Cruz is changing a lot. The size of Humboldt sounds very nice too, I read that there are about 5,500 students. I love that green, rainy type of climate/area!

if u are looking into another smaller CSU, Sonoma State might be a school to look into...45 mins-1 hr from San Francisco...i might go there for the SPring 2006 semester...still deciding since i'm still waiting for my admissions status for other CSU schools...but Sonoma has a really nice campus and 65% of the students are girls...what more can u ask for lol...anyways, if i do go there for the spring semester..it depends on if i like it or not..i might transfer down south to long beach or SD next fall

Alison, I think I'm the one that told you to check out Humboldt. As I recall, you're interested in art. Humboldt has an awesome art program with over 500 majors and lots of course options. The entry level art classes can fill up fast, but they have enough course selections that this usually isn't a problem. They also have a Freshman Year interest group specifically for art majors where you are pre-enrolled in required art classes. Humboldt does have a crunchy-granola hippie type feeling but also has more "normal" types as well. It is a school/area known for having lots of pot around, but the word I have is that if you don't indulge you can also find your group to hang out with. If you're interested in Humboldt, apply ASAP --- they do rolling admissions so your chances go down as the year wears on (they have a 59% overall admit rate). My daughter applied in early October and has already been accepted. Like you, she considers it a safety school but wouldn't be upset if that's where she ended up for some reason. She has similar stats to you (slightly higher test scores though) so I'd say you can consider it a safety IF you get your application in soon.

Wow thanks Carolyn! I've had my application complete, I've just been waiting to send it, I didn't know it was rolling admissions! Awesome. Thanks! I'll be sending that in tomorrow.

hey! I went to Humboldt for one year in 28 years ago!! Wow, that makes me ancient!

I grew in sunny southern California and I wanted different environment and climate than non-stop sunny days.
It does rain a lot, green and beautiful with the coast, scenery, trees, etc. If you don't mind crisper, colder weather and more rain, than you'd like the weather there. I wanted to get out of the city. I loved the beautiful and peaceful area.
I couldn't go home very often though. The folks there think of San Francisco as South! Consider the distance!

I came from a huge so. Calif. college, but since I switched majors I ended transferrring back down to the southern California school. I remember there were a lot of forestry majors there. And yes, there was a fair amount of organic folks and pot.

I did take an Art History class for fun and in concert band.
I lived in an apartment building off campus all full of college students. The hard part for me was balancing grocery shopping, cooking, etc. with classes living in an apartment but this would be true at any college. Looking back, I probably should have had a mini meal plan even as an off campus student.

I lived close enough to walk to campus. (but later had my car). That's when we could get to the beach or restaurants in other towns and the beautiful parks. I really missed going to warmer beaches. (I would go to the beach from my so. Calif. school).
Well, hope this helps a little as I recall memories....
