Sonoma State or Humboldt State?

I really love both Sonoma State University and Humboldt State University. SSU is much closer to my home and I feel very comfortable there, although they lack some of the programs I'm interested in. I'm going to visit HSU in April, and they have more programs I like. Although, it's about 5 hours away from home. I am an honors student with a 4.3 GPA, but I think I would benefit and enjoy a small school with a laid back attitude.

Any advice on my choice or either of the schools?

I would go to the school that has the programs you’re interested in…unless you feel that it’s too far from home. My D went to Humboldt State for a little while, but it was really far from where we live (southern Cal). We would fly to Oakland, rent a car and then drive 6 more hours! The problem with Humboldt is that it’s a lot harder to fly home (unlike going to UC Santa Cruz and flying to LA for the weekend).

But, 5 hours is really doable. Either way, you’ll get a great education.

I definitely agree with that, but I’m really close to my family. I’m interested in communications and film, mostly artsy things. Humboldt seems to have more of an interesting arts program, but Sonoma still has a film minor and is closer to home and to SF.

I too faced the choice between Humboldt and Sonoma (among other CSUs) and wound up graduating from Sonoma. Just loved my time there…great dorms, family atmosphere, professors make time for you, and small class sizes (one prof said the state gives them extra dough to keep the average size down). I know Humboldt has a similar class sizes, but the vibe at Sonoma really drew me there. The choice should really come down to what is more important to you, programs vs. environment. I wound up choosing Sonoma knowing another school had a stronger program, but I wound up doing well anyway and graduating with honors! My only advice is to wait until you visit HSU, then your gut instincts will kick in and you will have your decision. Best of luck!
