Hi,
My son was admitted to SMU for the 2015-16 year. His stats are 31 ACT , 1400 SAT , 3.6 unweighted GPA and 4.6 weighted. He was given the Founders’ Scholarship which awards him $15k each year for 4 years. This would still make the net amount over 35k a year. We can’t afford the balance and he doesn’t want the loans. I see where he could try for the Hunt Scholarship which is due Jan 15. You have to produce a YouTube video as well as another essay. He’s burnt out on essays since he’s applied to 10 schools. Does anyone know what the likelihood is getting this all-tuition paid scholarship?
Thank you
Hi @joranger my son is a current Hunt Scholar. Last year SMU received approximately 1000 applications and interviewed 66 students. Of those 66, they made about 30 offers for the 25 scholarships.
The Hunt Scholarship focuses heavily on leadership. Can you tell me a bit about your son’s extra curricular activities?
Also, alone, the Hunt Scholarship does not cover 100% of the tuition. It covers the difference between your states flagship tuition and SMU’s tuition. The Hunt Scholarship can not be stacked with other university scholarships, such as the Founders, but can be stacked with department scholarships, such as BBA Scholar.
It’s an amazing scholarship with invaluable opportunities. I would highly encourage anyone with strong leadership and solid academics to apply.
I am happy to try and answer any other questions you might have.
Hi, the main requirement for Hunt is significant leadership:
“”“This is normally reflected through serving in top leadership positions of high school organizations. This requirement may also be reflected through significant leadership accomplishments in areas outside the high school setting. Examples of such leadership may include: Senior or Junior class president or Student Council president, Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper, founders of organizations, senior leadership in scouting or service organizations, Boys State or Girls State representative.”""
If he has a position along those lines and SMU is one of his favorite schools, it would be worth it to apply!
Plus your son’s academic stats are good, and that’s part of the consideration.
And as the previous poster said, Hunt makes the SMU tuition the same price as the top public school in your home state.
I feel your pain about writing more essays! The perks are awesome, and You can view other candidate’s videos by googling youtube hunt scholar videos. They just want a brief, simple video, so that part’s not too difficult.
Just FYI, SMU is fair with need-based money. The overall picture may look different when you have that piece of the puzzle. Best of luck to you.
@doreearch – sent you a PM.
