HWS vs. SUNY Brockport Delta College

So we are down to the final days of decision time and D is still conflicted. She would like to major in International Studies, concentration in Africa and study abroad, possibly work for non-profit or govt.eventually. She has been accepted into Brockport's Delta College with scholarship, she could graduate in 3 years with a summer month long study in Kenya as well as a semester in Ghana, no student debt. We were all blown away by our visit to Hobart and William Smith, where she has been offered 1/2 scholarship, but would have some debt upon graduation (25K). IR is their strongest program, college president is a former director of Peace Corp, and deputy chief of staff for Clinton. Would the opportunities offered by the "connections" of graduating from HWS be worth it? Any input is appreciated as she has only a few days!

Did she like the campus of SUNY Brockport? That wasn’t a place on our radar, but I have to say, I agree with you about HWS. It seems to be a fantastic place. $25,000 in debt is < $300. in monthly payments for 10 years. Is that worth it? I would think so, but, hey, if she loves Brockport, then it isn’t.

Certainly the terms SUNY Brockport have given your D are attractive. I assume this SUNY Brockport, wherever it is, is part of the state university system, so it’s quite different from a small LAC such as HWS. What are the sizes of the classes? Are there TAs? How big is the school? Is she looking for a traditional college residential experience or something else? How well does your child function in large settings? Is she able to advocate for herself? Is she outgoing and friendly so she won’t get lost in the shuffle? Hopefully these questions will help define what is the better fit for her.

What sort of assurances does your D have that she will graduate from Brockport in three years? Frankly, they have enough trouble graduating students in five years that I would be skeptical. Unless she is being given a year’s worth of credits for AP and SUNY-in-the-High-School courses?

Brockport is NW of Rochester, smaller SUNY about 6,000 kids. The Delta College is a college within the college with only 60 freshmen, in which she would earn all of her GE requirements in interdisciplinary seminar style classes. That is really the selling point for her, because she is not really outgoing and a self advocate-hopefully that will develop  The director of Delta sat down with us for an hour and discussed the program and mapped out her 3 years by semester.

The HWS campus was amazing, all of the students, staff, deans, and the president were very impressive. The debt would definitely be manageable. I feel like she would get a great education.

Thanks so much for the input, the discussion continues. I think we will keep quiet about it for a few days and then sit down once again after she/we have had some time to contemplate. Just want her to be happy and have a successful experience…the story of being a parent!

If $$ wasn’t a major factor then HWS for the reasons you originally stated.
