Getting into any ivy is certainly a commendable achievement for everyone, despite what some may think. I mean honestly, any one of the ivies are great achievements for students nation/world-wide.

I go to a public school where ivies are generally unheard of. So when I got into UPenn, i get those proud congratulatories from my friends/teachers/family. But after a while, they’re like, so u got into UPenn? Why not HYP? Somehow, UPenn doesnt seem as great of an achievement to them beacuse it is not HYP. Total BS i’d say. UPenn and the other ivies are not “below” HYP, but people treat it like so. What would you say to these people? What do u think?

yeah, to me upenn is just a great as hyp, but i still get those sullen "well, okay, if u say so" responses when people hear that i turned down a hyp to go to upenn.....

i think it's b/c of its name.....it's not prestigious enough or something 'cause it sounds like a state school.......

hahah.. F.U. personally, i think this would create a lot of jokes about the school. even tho it's witty, constant mockery would tear away from prestige

Yeah I think the name has a lot to do with it. If it were renamed to something that could just be a simple name or word it would probably get better reception. Psychological factors do have an impact :)

i think it has to do with HYP being among the 3 oldest schools in the nation and excelled so quickly its had prestige for hundreds of years that their names have just stuck

And remember Penn wasn't very selective, not to the level of being elite, as late as '92 when its ED admit rate was 80% and RD rate was 40%. So it will take a while for people's perception to change.

yeah it sucks...i always have to say "i'm going to the university of pennsylvania...THE IVY LEAGUE" whenever people ask me where i'm going. either no one has heard of penn or confuses it with PSU.

It will change over time...Penn has only been stellar very recently in its history.

Consider that the students going through Penn right now are the best and brightest students ever to be going through Penn in its long history.

Or as one person put it, Penn has improved to the point where most of its current alumni would be unable to gain admission to Penn if they were to apply today...

Start telling people you're going to "Penn," not "the university of pennsylvania." It helps ;-)

Though admittedly, getting into HYP is a greater feat than getting into Penn. Their acceptance rates are roughly 1/2 that of Penn's.

Remember that they have smaller classes. Penn has nursing where admit rate is 40%. DO NOT GO BY RATES. PTON HAS YIELD RTAE 69%. ALSO COMMON APP INFLATE THE NUMBERS. NYU GOT 30000 APPLICATIONS, SO IT IS THE HOTTEST SCHOOL ON PLANET I GUESS.

But even in the early 90's, Penn was still ranked at #13. I wouldn't say that's an emabarassment. Perceptions of schools change with the decades.
I remember going through high school in the late 80's... ANY guy would have given their first born child to attend the U of Chicago. Chicago is without a doubt an outstanding school, but more and more guys are not just focused on that particular institution like they were in the 80's. I think Penn/Wharton has taken the place of Chicago's perception among us males in today's society.
I know HYP use to be considered the "Big 3", but I'm not sure if that's the case any more. I think most people look at it as a brand-name, rather than the quality of education in HYP (alhtough they are still amazing schools).
I would say Penn and even Columbia have jumped up there among young professionals as the "place to be".

yea i agree with thomas, most people that ive talked to say HYP is only a brand name, and that most people can get an equally great education at some other college...
