Ok, I'm pretty sure I have no idea what's going on with the I-9. I thought I knew what it was (that poorly photocopied New Jersey work permit thing), but it doesn't say I-9 anywhere. Is this a form we've already gotten? Will we get it? Do we have to get it from someone other than princeton?

The orientation schedule makes a passing reference to the form but without any more info as to what precisely it is. We need it to sign in on the 10th, right?

I believe the poorly photocopied thing was for students under 18 (you know, child labor laws and all that...) As far as I remember, you don't fill out the actual I-9 until you found a job.

If that's the form I think it is, it's a tax form and you must fill it out in order to work at Princeton. They want you to fill it out even if you're not planning on getting a job, as a formality, and to streamline the process should you change your mind.

Technically, it's not a permit. It's a verification thingie, all employers are supposed to make sure you have the right to work in the U.S. Non-citizens must present the documentation about their eligibility, that's all it has to do with immigration.

There are some exceptions listed, but otherwise... everyone who is a new employee is filling that out. For citizens, it's enough to show that you are a citizen, of course.
