I accidentaly put "divorced" instead of "widowed" and now colleges want the noncustudial statement.

Hello guys,
I have a problem. My parents are divorced and then one of them died, but I didn’t consider that important for the financial aid until I received request to submit the noncustodial form…
I havent sent my CSS profile yet, and I managed to change it to “widowed”, however I had added the colleges in the list and for example I can see at Dartmouth personal profile that they are awaiting “non custodial report”…what should I do?
1.When the site works again, should I delete all of them and add them again, may that help?
2. When I actually send the CSS profile, they will receive the right information and the "awaiting " will disappear
3.Email the colleges…(I really dont want to since I already annoyed them much )
Thank you guys,
,

You just need to contact the colleges. You will have to show proof that your dad is no longer alive (death certificate or something) and the non-custodial form will be waived.

ETA…I happen to agree with you…your mom was divorced…she wasn’t married to your dad when he died. She really isn’t “widowed” in my opinion.

First, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father.

While I agree with Thumper and you, that your mom was divorced, I can see why in your situation you’re supposed to put widowed (even tho the death occured later). My cousin faced the same situation. She was told to put widowed because, for FA purposes, it doesn’t matter to them that the death occurred after a divorce decree.

But, either way, you’d probably have to supply a death cert. I’ve heard that schools that require NCP info do require death certs to prevent people from putting widowed to avoid involving the NCP.

Do what you need to do to get a copy of the death cert. You or your mom may already have one if one was needed for you to collect SS benefits after your father’s death.

The financial aid people are Dartmouth are very nice and easy to work with. Call them, explain your situation. They will ask for a copy of your father’s death certificate. You will send it. However any assets you may have (monies from inheritance, insurance monies) may also need to be listed on the profile.
