When I was very young, my parents got divorced. Since then, my mother has passed away and my father has become my full legal guardian. When the PROFILE asked for my parents' martial status I put "divorced" because, well, they did get divorced. But then it started talking about my "noncustodial parent" filling out forms, which would not be possible. Should I put their martial status as "widowed," then?

“widowed” makes the most sense, since you only have one surviving parent.

MomCat2: is that what I should put as my father’s marital status as well?

First, condolences on the loss of your mother.

If your dad hasn’t remarried, then put widowed.

While it’s a gray area…it makes the most sense since your mom has passed and obviously there is no financial info to provide about her.

I can see the same problem if your mom had passed while your parents were married, and then your dad remarried, but then divorced. It would still be best for your dad just to put widowed.

If your dad hasn’t remarried, then put widowed.

Exactly.

My kids father is deceased, and I have remarried, so my marital status is married. Profile schools have in the past requested a non-custodial form be filled out, to which I copy the death certificate and send it to the financial aid office.

It has never been a problem.

Thank you for your help, mom2collegekids and susgeek. (And MomCat2 as well.)

Your reasoning makes a lot of sense, and it helped me out a lot. :)
