I am 100% white and look 100% white but I just checked up on common app to see if my midyear report is in and I found that I made a TERRIBLE mistake when I was filling out my personal information. I said that I was american indian or alaskan native and white instead of just white and my first college decisions are coming out in less than a week. I don’t want to be accepted to any university because of something I’m not and I don’t want to be rejected from any colleges if the admissions offices realize and think that I was lying to get better chances. Would the write thing to do be emailing all of the admissions offices or should I try to act like I didn’t notice?? I’m really stressed out about this now, I applied to more colleges than just the ones on common app but my top school is there and I’m freaking out. The schools I applied to on common app were NYU, Chapel Hill, and UMBC does anyone know how well they vet their applicants and what I should do about this in general.
Just contact them by E-Mail and let them know about the error.
And since it’s getting late in the game, talk to your GC, who might also send a note. I agree this should be corrected.
Honest mistake. Just correct the form and contact the school. These items are more for demographic stats and don’t usually boost the candidate that much.
Tell them before you get the notifications. If you wait until afterwards, it’s going to feel very deceptive, in my opinion.
OP put Native American, which, if she meets expectations, is a boost. Needs to correct.
They are going to require tribal documents for Native American when you enroll. If you don’t have that, you are screwed if they admit you thinking you are Native American.
you can be native american without being in a tribe, just like you can be black without being born in Africa
^ Some colleges require NA tribe enrollment to be considered NA for admission.
Yes, you need to fix it. You know it was an accident but it could be interpreted as a more calculated misrepresentation /lie, and that could have unfortunate consequences. Get on it ( and get GC’s help if necessary.)
