Hello,

I am a rising junior in high school and just had a few questions regarding my chances at college admissions. Here's a little background first.

My freshmen year in high school I had a 3.83 unweighted GPA
With B's in english and French. I played varsity golf but was also a hard working musician. I practiced piano 3-4 hours a day and was accepted to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The summer before I had traveled to California for a music festival and the upcoming summer I was accepted to the School of the Arts summer festival which I attended. My sophomore year I made straight A's at the school of the arts and was involved in Chess club (there is lack of extracurriculars at the school). I was accepted to a music festival in Switzerland which I will attend this summer. I am thinking about transfering back to regular public high school for more rigorous academics and more structured extracurriculars because I do not see myself concertizing as a pianist.

Am I on the right path for successful college admissions? I am looking at; UNC, NYU, DUKE, Columbia, Princeton, Brown, Boston College, etc

...?

Really depends on your test scores. THose are some great schools, with tough chances. I would say stick with the piano because these elite schools want to see a"standout student"

The structured ECs are not a reason to transfer back to public high school. Colleges see too many kids already who have a laundry list of clubs they preside over and ‘look-alike’ school-related activities that they lead. Someone who is pursuing their passion independently and at a high level of competence, as you are with music, is more unusual and interesting. You don’t have to be a concert pianist, by the way. There are lots of paths that music can take you - or it can simply be a way of enriching your life in addition to whatever becomes your major focus.

As for the more rigorous academics, that’s a different matter. It depends on how strong or weak your current program is and how motivated you are to add academic rigor on your own vs. joining a high school that will provide it for you (along with students who are more academically competitive.)

There are barely any AP’s and I can only take four classes a year. I will only have 2 sciences and 2 foreign language credits. Also I mean I can always say I went there for a year and left for academia so it will still help me. Also wouldn’t it be better to be involved in things that are related to engineering; internships, jobs, science classes. I don’t know. Any thoughts?

If you now know that you don’t want a performance career, then it may make sense to transfer back to your local HS. However, you should take the time to find out where the graduates of NC Arts go to college if they decide not to pursue an arts career. You may be surprised.
