I cheated... I know, I know, "you're an idiot." But all thats being done is that I'm given a 0 for the assignment. I was wondering how this affects my chances of being put into NHS, or my chances for colleges. How much will colleges look at this or NHS?

I think you have blown your chances for National HONOR Society.

As for college admissions, it will depend on how it is written into your high school records. Not all colleges will rule you out with one bad spot on your record, but you probably want to explain it to the schools you apply to, perhaps in your essay about what you learned from a stupid choice (and yes, I’d use the word “choice” instead of “mistake” because that indicates that you are taking responsibility for what you did).

Even if its not being reported to NHS or being put on my school record?

Your school makes recommendations for NHS. Do you think your school that knows about the cheating will overlook it?

Maybe I wasn’t as clear as I could have been. I am a high school sophmore. I cheated on an English in-class essay worth 40 points (not so big in the long run) and got a 0. I can still come back and get a B in the class (grade is only 77%). And then that was it. There is no record on my school record and he didn’t contact NHS. So… I’m not really sure what will happen. Did I dodge a bullet here? Just looking for some insight

You may still not get into NHS. The admission criteria also has a local component, and is not based on grades alone. If that particular teacher is on the review committee, or mentions the cheating, you may be denied.

Not getting into NHS is minor in the grand scheme of things, though.

I think because it is Sophomore year and it was only an in class writing you will be fine when it comes time to apply to college! As for NHS, that is totally up to how your school does things. Just have a killer junior year and own the SATs and colleges should look up at your upward trend.

@MizzBee he’s not on the board for my school.

ok, you made a mistake, I don’t think you’re here looking for judgement,
but you probably shouldn’t let it happen again.

imo, keep it low profile and be careful with what you post online about this incident, someone that knows you/from your school could be reading this, and with what you post online in the future, because it’s easy to find out someone’s identity based on where you’re applying and other info…

so yeah, just keep it quiet and be super nice to everyone at your school. not a very moral thing to say, I know…

A school principal once told me that cheating at the top of the class is more prevalent than at the bottom, and its true.

DON"T EVER DO IT AGAIN. EVER. Better to get a lower grade or flunk an exam than cheat.

Your life is more important than some stupid grade or what college you get into.

Apologize to the teacher profusely. Don’t make excuses or start whining about NHS or anything else. Just focus on what happened in class and tell the teacher you made a grave error and it wont happen again.

Don’t discuss it with your friends or on facebook. Its a matter between you and the teacher and God. (and perhaps your parents.)

Take pride in your own work and doing your best. Pay no attention to others’ grades or class rank.

Good luck.
