so far SAT:2060
Ethnicity: Black
Gender: male
Grades:
First term: 3 A-, 1 A+, 2 88s

Second term: 6 A-

Third term: 1 A, 1 A-, 2 88s, 85, 82

The third term was difficult for me because my father just came back into my life after 17 years so it was hard to concentrate. DO you think I should tell somebody this or just leave it alone? I dont want to whine.

Next year I'm taking really difficult classes and my goal which I'm determined to accomplish is to earn at least a 93 in every class the first term.

My top 3 are Upenn, Tufts, Brown.

Also my school is ranked among the top 30 orivate schools in America. Thank You all.

A few questions from a Mom here. Why do you feel it is necessary to go to those schools? Are you happy to have your father back in your life? It seems that a few schools maybe a step down(but still excellent) should be added to your list as safeties. It would take a little pressure off of you. Also, I think that your experiences will make for a great essay. Do you have a good relationship with your guidance couselor? You should discuss it with sombody.Good Luck.

A lot of kids claim life issues (not saying you aren't sincere). I'm not sure about the process, ask a counselor I guess (never used a counselor or known one so no idea). As for UPenn and Brown which are the only 2 I've researched from the 3, I need to see your ECs to find out if you have a chance. Being a URM helps but your ECs are crucial so it would be more prudent for you to post them and then let us evaluate. But make sure you ask your counselor about your dad as I have no idea what to do and it might make a good angle...

"Also my school is ranked among the top 30 private schools in America"

^where do you get this information?

Anyway, it would help to know your ECs and other stuff. I'd recommend retaking the SAT to shoot for 2100+. About your Dad coming back, I would think that colleges would want to hear about it. If you choose to do an essay on it, just make sure to do it in such a way that doesn't sound like you're making excuses - they'll get the hint. I'd say you've got great chances if you can raise that SAT and write a really good essay (assuming you have the ECs to back it up).

Definitely mention your father's reentry into your life because the Adcoms will (potentially) think you were loafing in that 3rd term (the grades noticeably dropped off, but not as precipitously as you worry that they did, so RELAX!) if you are quiet.

Moreover, I would make the most of the family thing with Dad; it might be a GREAT essay topic on your apps.

Finally, procure the opinion of a couple respected teachers about if/whether they noticed you were distracted in the third term. They might have suggestions both to keep you better-focused in the Fall, and to deal with the new person in your life.

Don't expect too much, however, less you get hurt. Hope for the best, but be realistic. GOOD LUCK and keep us posted!
