I am the Apple Campus Rep at Penn. Ask me any questions about getting a Mac here

Dell Go Away!!!!

haha!!!! BUY DELL!!!!!!!!: )

You will be able to purchase a Dell notebook with Ubuntu in time for school So for those of you who are sick of Windows there is an alternative from Dell.

There is one thing I must confess that I applaud ;)

Bravo, Dell!

Though if you'd like a slightly easier to use UNIX-based Windows alternative, Mac OS X is swell.

One last question... if I buy the MacBook Pro and intend to buy an external monitor that does NOT come from Apple, do I need to buy any special adaptor or DVI thingie, or will this come with the Pro?

No, the MacBook Pro comes with an industry-standard DVI port. You're in the clear :)

Ubuntu is a Linux- based operating system that allows you to have the “best of Mac and Windows worlds.” It offers

• The security and look of Mac
• The ability to run a multitude of programs with ease
• The ability to dual-boot with programs such as Vista for the best gaming experience
• The ability to customize your desktop
• The opportunity to save money as it is virtually free

I don't doubt that Ubuntu Linux is better than Windows (though to be fair that doesn't take much).

It's just not better than Mac OS X ;)

I wanna get to penn and buy my macbook pro ( you actually got me convinced johnny) lol...I've been obsessing and checking it out on the apple site every couple of days hahaha

woot. that's my job :D

thanks johnnyk,

can we buy that "pocket-adapter" at penn?

Puccagirl,

No, I have not seen it at the Penn computer store, probably because it is such a low-volume item. You can just get it online from any e-retailer that suits you.

ok, i'm convinced, it's a macbook for me!

now my only problem is deciding between the black and the white. i think they both look good, and with the computer connection's discount the extra cost for the black is pretty much moot. (the discount on applecare is nice too!)

what i want to know is how much of a difference the extra 40 gigs and the other upgrades that come with the black actually make. i'll mostly using my computer for papers and facebook - no video editing or gaming.

can you help me out?

=) erin

Wooo Mac!

hehe.

I'd go for the white one, simply because the black one's extra HD space just doesn't justify the premium you pay, unless you REALLY prefer black over white.

does the mac come with microsoft office or would we have to buy that separately? if so, how much does that cost?

When is a good time to purchase my macbook? I've been stoked about getting a macbook for a long time and I wanted your opinion about when a good time to purchase one is. I have never owned a Mac before so I figured I would need a little time to adjust. I'll stop rambling now and wait for an answer lol

No computers (mac or windows) sold through Penn come with MS Office already. Fortunately it is reasonably priced at $99 for students buying a new computer

Hi there upennfreak

If you want time to adjust then I would get it this summer. Wait for Penn's computer store to send you stuff in the mail (they usually do it in July I think) and then with your PennKey, log onto Campus Express and order the computer.

Make sure you specify for it to be delivered to your home right away (either that or it will be for pick-up and you will have to wait 'til you get here!)

hi
ive read from somewhere that the new mac os (leopard) will be available sometime in october... should we wait until then to purchase a new mac?? would the cost of buying a new OS (CD) be more than the higher price they would set at the start on the mac that come with the new OS??? will we still get student discount if we wait until october?? thanks ~ ^_^

Aaaahhh... just got my new MacBook Pro in the mail and love it... thanks for the advice (... even though ... after I started posting here I decided not to go to Penn ... but help is appreciated nonetheless.)

pucca, the new OS upgrade is only $69 for students. Apple also looks the other way if you use the same DVD on multiple macs (shhhh)
