JohnnyK, does the Apple store at Penn do the promotion around September where if you buy a Mac you automatically get $150 off any iPod?

Usually, it does. But that is not the computer store's promotion, that is a nationwide promotion done by Apple corporate. So I cannot guarantee they will do it again.

Though I don't know why they wouldn't ;)

So I want to get a MacBook or MacBook pro, but also want to get a nice big monitor to use for watching movies/so I don't have to stare at the tiny screen all the time while doing papers, etc. MacBook Pros seem to be set up for the extra monitor- are MacBooks similarly set up, or is it harder/impossible to hook the MacBook up to an external monitor? Also, is it essential to buy the Apple-made monitor, or will a different (cough cheaper cough) one work with whatever it hooks in to? (I'm soooo great with my computer terminology... not. Sorry.)

I plan on connecting my macBook Pro to my television (thus saving the money for a monitor), so i guess this question is also relevant to me.

But I've seen Macs hooked up to non Apple made monitors. My guess would be that the macBooks are the same.

JohnnyK, defend your family's honor in the Penn Class of 2011 group

Gracello,

Yes you can hook up the MacBooks to other monitors, Apple or not. You just need to buy the mini-DVI to DVI adapter ($17 at the Computer Connection).

Make sure you get a DVI monitor and not a VGA one, simply because VGA ones look like crap compared to DVI (DVI is an all-digital connection)

haha I didn't know it was that deep Venkat89...

Wait what's going on in that facebook, i'm not about to wade through all that gibberish

the dell representative is attempting to woo us on the Penn Class of 2011 board. Apparently, there is a website set up for dell that you can already browse the available computers with the PENN discounts

Hah!

Enjoy. I wouldn't wish a Dell on my worst enemies.

I mean, if you're going to get a Windows machine, at LEAST get the ThinkPads. Dells are just...so...mediocre. In every sense.

What did you say about my mother?

Anyway, join the facebook group and answer people's questions about Macs and all that good stuff. Defend your honor and your integrity. Either that or hand over your position as the Mac representative to me :)

lol...I simply inform people. I am not in charge of wooing...but www.dell.com/penn is the Penn website for Dell where Penn students, faculty, and staff receive a discount of up to 12% : )...I am perfectly happy if you choose to purchase a MAC

I on the other hand, do not inform. I save people, like digital Jesus.

I am perfectly happy if you choose to purchase a Mac (note how it's not MAC, which would make it an acronym for the ATM company). However if you choose a Dell then I will send a plague of locusts and boils to your dorm room.

Also, your computer will be a piece of crap, but that's not my doing, that's Dell's ;)

I'm tempted to buy a Mac just because JohnnyK is backing them. It's a horrible reason, but I'm not a rational person.

LOL....I am sorry but I prefer MAC thank you. When you buy a Mac you definitely go to the MAC and spend lots of money for no reason.

Actually, my XPS M1210 is great!!! I called Dell and it was customized just for me as to going and getting a computer off of a store shelf with a bunch of things that I didn't need. It has lots of memory, looks amazing, and has sooo many extra features for those individuals who choose to "game" and watch TV on it. Also, since I am in Wharton, my Dell PC is actually RECOMMENDED and supported by the University unlike MAC. I am a happy customer!

Except for ease of use, virus-free, spyware free, hacking free, crashing less, with better bundled multimedia creation software and more highly-rated customer support and satisfaction, that is...

As for "looks amazing"...a picture is worth a thousand words

I'd say more "looks like they took a hundred components from the lowest bidder and threw them around a plastic shell. It reeks of poor engineering.

Not to say PC makers are incapable of making nice hardware. Sony VAIOs for example are nice (with a price tag to match). Dells, however, are not. You get what you pay for, and in this case you get the K-Mart of computers.

Macs in Wharton are supported in every way that matters. When you need a Windows program, use the computer lab (as if you were going to buy the program anyway, duh!)

I have plenty of friends in SAS and Wharton who have switched from Windows to Mac. I honestly can't think of one who has gone the other way.

Embrace your inner 19th-century German philosopher, venkat. Rationality is nothing.

hi, there! im considering buying a Mac at Penn as well... but recently my friend told me that because of the way that, in Mac, CD just slipped into the slot unlike most of the other laptops which sort of have CD trays which spring out when u press eject... this make us unable to insert in the "mini-CD" .. the ones which u use in video camcorder.. like the Sony ones...because it is too small ... is that true?? my friend says that's the downside of Mac!!

Puccagirl,

Use something like this http://www.amazon.com/Pocket-Adapter-Drives-Player-Cartridge/dp/B000067VBS

An adapter that makes it work in full size slot-loading drives like the MacBook's

You will be able to purchase a Dell notebook with Ubuntu in time for school :) So for those of you who are sick of Windows there is an alternative from Dell.

As I said before, Dell has a partnership with Penn and all students receive a discount of up to 12% on their computer purchases!

You can visit Penn's Dell website: www.dell.com/penn
