I am very impressed.

I would like to thank you Caltech, for giving my friend a second chance. When he was caught running a cheating ring, I thought that he would be screwed for college, but evidently I was wrong. My friend is very talented - only Caltech could have seen past all of the "superficial" layers and seen to the great person inside that he is.

Now I wish I had applied to Caltech...

I serve(d) on the Board of Control (BoC), which handles honor system violations, so I thought I should reply to this. I did not sit on this particular case.

That sounds like a pretty egregious offense to me. For the BoC to allow him to stay at Caltech, they must have strongly felt that he would not cheat again. This could have been inferred from his honesty, demeanor, sorrow, or general willingness to change and live under the honor code (with the board's help).

The BoC's actions are meant to be protective and not punitive; that's probably why your friend was allowed to stay (and maybe why you were surprised). Let me assure you that other guilty defendants have been put on leave from Caltech for much less malicious offenses, when the BoC thought there was a significant chance that they would cheat again.

I’m glad that your friend is/was eventually able to live under Caltech’s Honor Code – the fact that people can and do change is what makes me so proud of how the BoC operates.

Also, the BoC highly values the confidentiality of its defendants so please don’t post any specifics about your friend (not that you have – just want to make sure you don’t).

I think he is referring to the fact that his friend was accepted at Caltech.

Ah, that would make a little more sense.

i'm curious, after getting admitted to caltech, what are possible reasons for your admission to be rescinded?

LMAO.. for a guy who's running a cheat ring?

If your grades change significantly or if they found out you lied on your application are the only things that come to mind. I have no idea how admissions would handle a situation where information like this arose after admission. However, from mruncleramos's post, it sounds like his friend was up front and that's not an issue.

cghen... who are you? (This is Michelle)

Hey Michelle,

I'm Mike G.

how about something like AP tests? can you get booted out for like one less than stellar AP score from this coming may? kinda concerned because i signed up for the AP environmental science test and its the first year my school is offering the course and the first time the teacher has taught the course so i have no clue if i'm being adequately prepared or not...

No! Nobody has ever been booted out for AP scores. In fact, there's no reason we should see them, and we almost certainly won't. :-)

Thats good to know, since my AP Physics class just finished friction like a week ago and just began circular motion...

omg, is your ap physics class going in order? like, have you guys been doing mechanics from the beginning, or did you guys finish all the other stuff first?

yeah, I think its in order... were just going really slowly. I dont understand why, everyone in our class is like really smart (our teacher is new to our school, but he claims hes had high AP scores in the past). Its very strange, he manages to make this stuff hard for a lot of people though, and he takes off huge amounts for unorganization and stuff (luckily Im organized anyways). Its by far the strangest class ive ever been in!

the only explanation i can think of is he's going to prepare you guys so well for mechanics that u'll still be able to pass the test even if you haven't covered any of the other stuff...

i hope so!! i think im actually the only person taking the test.. i wouldnt either but i feel really bad for him and its just 3 hours or whatever of my life.. i think we might only be expected to take the mechanics C test, so thats good!

Actually my friend didn't put it on his app... And I don't know if our school notified Caltech... If they did, then great! If not then...
