I am very lost.

I am having trouble with a little of everything so I thought the best place would be to post it here.

My current problem and situation is this. I am 20 years old with adhd and have just gotten a GED after my online school screwed me over by assigning my classes for me but telling me later at 19 that i needed (and should have) to take a years+ worth of other credits. I want to start college as soon as possible but I have some difficulties.

All of the colleges I see (I live in Ohio) Have room, board, tuition and food that will make an estimated cost of 20k a year. I do work, but I don't have that much money saved up so it will all be loans. Can people really live with an 80k debt out of college? I could commute to college because my wonderful parents are letting me live here while I go to college if I want to, but the idea of being 24 years old and being at my parents kind of bothers me, even though people tell me they are proud of me for wanting to go.

How do people do it? I read that the average debt people graduate with is less than 30k, but all the numbers I see add up to 80k!

I seriously need advice right now, I'm keeping myself up late trying to figure this out but I feel hopeless right now. I've always loved computers and am about to assemble one myself, so i want a degree related in that. My parents are also lower income so I would get financial aid as well. But the choices of colleges when you're commuting is few. I need to know what are the first steps I should take.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You didn’t mention your general area in Ohio, but according to the College Board website Ohio U has in-state tuition and fees at less than $5000, and Ohio State U at less than $7000. Apply for aid and scholarships to try and bring that number down even lower. I would take advantage of your parents’ offer to live with them. Avoid the undergrad debt. If you choose a school close by you can still get a nice college experience by getting really involved on campus.

Get proper, recent enough documentation of the ADHD in order to get accommodations which will help you to show what you know. You are entitled to them if you have a diagnosis so why not do that for yourself? Disability offices at colleges will help you to figure all of that out.

I live in Medina County. How much debt do you think is too much to take on? I may not always have the option of living with my parents, so I’m curious. Akron college is much closer but the tuition is almost 10k a year. I’m sure I’d qualify for the federal grant but that wont cover that much.

Also, I’m footing the thing all by myself with loans, my parents wont contribute a dime to help me. Do you think community college would lead to a fair salary to live off of?

Someone needs to cosign any college loans you take unless you are 24.

How much debt to take on…It depends. Do you know what you want to major in yet? Do you have any ideas on a possible career? It’s OK if you don’t. For some careers, community college is fine. For others, a four year college or university is a must. I kind of think that going to a school like Ohio U would be an amazing experience no matter what, but really that’s a matter of personal choice.
