I.B. vs A.Levels

Or take it as an A1 language for the IB, and take English A1 as well (or A2, if you're slack) so you get kudos for an easy 7 and a bilingual diploma.

General paper is not even a full a level..its AS level..i am an A level student giving four full A levels this may/june Cambridge uni board. and yes u possible cant take more than six (or even six) full A levels in one sittings since each subject has an average of four papers, science subjects have 6-7 including practicals. This could only be possible if you had given AS levels before which are given at the end of the first year. Most of the UK universities require 3 full A-levels and one AS level if at all. standard offers even from Oxford/Cambride are max AAA. There are a lot of differen boards which are ofcourse much easier. And yes there is a wide variety of subjects. (check <a href="http://www.cie.org.uk%5B/url%5D">www.cie.org.uk</a>) In my school a lot of students take Urdu since its the local language and 85% of the students get A grades. Likewise there are easier subjects such as Business Studies which are not as rigourous. So in the end it really depends on the combination of your subjects. A combination of Business Studies and Economics for example does not receive credit as two A levels by the UCAS (which is like the common app in states, infact it is the only way of applying to any university in UK) due to the vast overlapping of the two courses. And by the way, after completion you get a certificate of higher education from the University of Cambridge. Hope this clears up a lot of things.

lol, I think we've digressed from the thread topic!

Anyway I heard that in Singapore, students are allowed to write a Special Paper. Could someone please explain what this is? Is it available in other countries?

To stsheikh, what is the General Paper?

ya sorry about that..i was actually just going though the posts. General Paper is more like a general knowledge paper. Like if youve been reading newspapers and up to date about all the latest things going around the world like research, science or art, conflicts erc ull do good. but you have to write essays so its scoring if your writing is good and your well informed generally. its not considered an academic subject by any university. just a nice thing to take maybe as a 4/5 subject if the rest of your subjects are really rigourous. by the way anyways else giving A levels this may. Hows the prep coming along. i have such bad clashes like law of tort on the same day as further math!!! and two econ papers the next day!!

lol well ppl do actually give 6 alevel papers. i gave 5 full alevels namely Physics, Chem, Computing, Urdu, Maths and one as general paper. had a 7th furthermaths. tried to do it in ayear but it was a little more taxing so i dropped it. timing of when u give ur papers really matter else a person cant give all 6 papers at once. i gave full aleve maths in june of my first year. gave urdu and GP in november tht year and then gave the rest 3 next june. General paper is totally rubbish . is isnt even a test of english. iuts like a gamble. if a topic ocmes on which u have general knowlegde u might get an A else u might get a D if all the topics appear obscure to you. CAnt say much for the IBs. but thin is american unis consider an A in alevels as a A+ and a b as an A- and a C as a B. dun know if the same is true with IB.

And the special paper?

Wow, so both you guys are doing further maths. Did you have to do add. math at o'level? How difficult is the further math from the normal a'level math.

your right about general paper..its complete nonsense..depends if your lucky enough to know about the topic..or else u bomb it

and further math is quite a handful. requires a lot of dedication...take a lot of my time..infact i dont get as much time for it bcoz my other subjects ie law and economics require a lot of reading..and they have essay questions which require more time..so im really worked up right now

umm further math has some completely new topics which are unrelated to regular math like summation of series, polar coordinates, vertical circles, rigid bodies, inertia and a lot of other stuff. but a lot of topics ere like advancements for example complez numbers in math has an added demoivers theorem in fmath, and it has root of unity. a lot of advanced integration.infact at one point it feels further math is just about integration and accuracy bcoz calculations can be very long. answers can run to pages sometimes. so it helps if you have a scientific calculater or a really advanced one especially for stats. saves a lot of time which is very precious. papers are three hour long. stats and mechanics are tested together int he same paper so that just adds to the pressure (i also have clashes!) overall math can sometimes have more tricky questions where as in fmath ur concepts have to be very clear and the patter of the questions changes (surprise questions). and bcoz the course is so vast u really need a good teacher too. but fmath is a challenge. take if you have the time, can get u more credit for college and its cool if you have physics along with it. but fmath is a lot more discouraging eg your working on this whole question for 15 minutes you cant prove the answer in the end. sometimes you just get stuck! (hey it is hard) infct fmath is suppose to be one of the hardest subjects in A levels i dont think any AP or IB compares to it. i have some college students doing the same stuff as me...

sorry i dont know what the special paper is. havent heard of anyone offering it here. disbravo which school did u go to
and yes in my school u need add maths before. bcoz regular math people do differentiation etc much later. in fmath ur calculus base has to be very strong!

thanks stsheik,
why is it that the mechanics for math is more complicated than the mechanics for physics?
anyone else with input on further math?

i dont take physics so i cant say much..but my friends who do say physics explains more logic and has a lot of theory..so it makes more sense..where as in math its a lot about calculations which dont always make sense. encore are u doing ur A levels?

yep, I'm in my first year of a'levels considering doing further math.
I had a choice between doing IB and a'levels, but choose the a'levels.
How long did it take you to finish the further math syllabus?

umm..frankly speaking i dont think you can manage it in a year. the syllabus might finish..but that could finish in three months if u worked day and night..but you need PRACTICE..lots of it!. reconsider it. i wouldnt if i were you. btw what other subjects do you have. maybe if ur workload is less who knows..

??????????? bump.............!!

math, physics, chemistry and literature. Not really that bad....
what subjects are you writing this june?

FMaths and Maths in a year :) Quite a nice pleasant time as I was planning to apply for Theoretical Physics so I had done most of FMaths beforehand.

FMaths requires you nothing more than Newton's 3 laws and the ability to do simple integration. That's it! True!

ipsen1985, did you do add. maths for o'level?

Nope, I completed my national (Vietnamese) specifications :)

which syllabus and which board are u talking about! only 13 out of 250 students in my school take it..its suppose to really hard. im talking about further math cambridge uni board. check the syllabus at the following link and some specimen papers too :)

<a href="http://www.cie.org.uk/CIE/WebSite/qualificationsandawardshub/qualificationhubs/generalqualsubject/generalqualsubject.jsp?oid=2920&typeoid=2208%5B/url%5D">http://www.cie.org.uk/CIE/WebSite/qualificationsandawardshub/qualificationhubs/generalqualsubject/generalqualsubject.jsp?oid=2920&typeoid=2208</a></p>

code is 9321 btw

I was with Edexcel so I suppose my exams were much easier than those of CIE :) I know I am no genius to do both subjects by CIE in a year :)
