I called Admissions today

Me: "When will non-top 10% applicants be notified?"
Adcom: "Probably the last 2 weeks of March"
Me: "Some non-top 10% people said they heard earlier this month"
Adcom: "I'm not aware of it"

I report. You decide.

thats bull, i was at my friends house when he got in, es top 14%, so obviously that person doesn't know what they are talking about.

yeah i agree with TDRAG. a friend of mine just found out last night she got in and she is not top 10%. in fact, she is even top 25% (though i doubt shes far from it). so all you people out there who think you have no chance cause of your non top 10% rank THERE IS HOPE!

granted, she's majoring in fine arts, but for them to admit her having not even been in the top 25% of our hs class is pretty big if you ask me.

oh yeah - apparantly another kid in my economics class found out too over the weekend.

It may have been a student working in the office answering phones. They probably told him to say end of March.

No one from my school has heard yet. We don't rank.

typo - i meant to say that she ISN'T even in top 25%

I called admissions today as well. But this time I decided to forge over the long distance charges and call the Admissions Office in Austin because my regional one (Houston) sometimes doesn't know the answers to questions plus when I called the lady who picked up seemed very unfriendly not to mention she did not help me...

I was informed that for non top 10% students, decisions are given between February and April 1st which explains why some people are already finding out. (I was just on Facebook to see yet another one of my non top 10% friends add "Texas '11" to their Education info.)

So now the real question is WHY these people are finding out sooner and why my application is still "under review" :(

libby-

An interesting question. Why are some people finding out?

My theory is that applying early as a non-top 10, in-state student was a bad decision. My app has been in since September and they've probably did a cursory review and threw it on the CAP pile never to be seen again. Applying later makes you fresh meat and you may have a better chance. Just a thought.

The guy I talked with in admissions was nice but he could have been the White House Press Secretary for all the evasive answers I got. Maybe he wasn't lying. Maybe he was so low down the food chain that he really was not aware.

It might be the school you apply too. I have friends who have not gotten in, both who applied before and after I did. And most of them had better or similar GPAs, but worse SAT/ACT then I did. I applied to Engineering, and got in as a 13.5%. I think it is either random, or its based on the school you apply to. I am glad I got in, but unless you have to decide on other colleges RIGHT now, I don't see what all the fuss is about.

i'm out of state but a handful of people have applied to UT. as far as i know, no one has heard back.

btw, my county isnt allowed to rank people but the other day i got a chart from the registrar that shows an estimated rank showing that i'm in the top 10-15%..how frustrating is that now?!?!

im hoping to at least get in as undeclared liberal arts

i guess some people are just anxious...and also would just like to know where they'll be going to school next year

some people are probably worried that since other non top 10%ers are being accepted and not them, that means they are rejected. However, i doubt this is the case so everyone just sit tight.

I'm not gonna lie...it's the anxiety that is making me so worked up about all this. I've gotten into 4 schools but it doesn't matter to me because UT is where I feel I belong...as cheesy and cliche as that may sound. It's just frustrating (A) having to wait (B) having to endure what seems like everyone else around you get in (C) knowing that the more people getting in, the less room there is for you. Blahhh. If there is one thing I would omit from senior year it would definitely be the stress of college applications/admissions.

jmryan316 - I'm with you. I would have no problem being Undeclared Liberal Arts. I have been contemplating switching majors to Psychology anyway plus since the first year is just general courses, it wouldn't really matter much.

I have a question. Everyone hear talks about the pros and cons of applying early vs. late. Does when you apply really affect your admission? My application was officially complete December 1st so I guess I am smack dab in the middle, but I always thought applying early was better? I was told by my UT Admissions Counselor that for non top 10% applicants they wait until the February 1st deadline THEN start reviewing/comparing applications, but I am a bit skeptical of that. Meh, who knows.

Im in the top 5% of my class, in-state (actually moved to Texas by myself a whole year before enrollment to gain residency), and applied in early September. Yet I still havent heard a thing from UT. Is it because Im applying to McCombs? Whats the deal?

tripperian- I applied to McCombs too. I'm in at other well-ranked B-schools but can't commit until I hear from UT.

So in our kitchen my mom bought one of those prayer candles that they sell at Fiesta Mart today. She wrote "UT Austin" in marker on the space where you write your wish and she light it tonight. And that, fellow cc'ers is what it's come to.

LOL. Well the other day I was in our church's adoration chapel and I when was coming out into the foyer I noticed a binder where I could see different people's handwriting on it. Because I am curious, I decided to see what it was. It was a binder filled with pieces of paper in which people could right to one of the saints to help intercede with your prayers. Well I figured that right now I need just about every prayer I can get so I wrote something along the lines of this "Dear God and Sister Faustina, I know I probably bother you a lot about this, but please help me to get into UT Austin. . ." Yeah, I also talked about some other stuff but that was definitely in there hahaha.

" So now the real question is WHY these people are finding out sooner and why my application is still "under review"

That's easy, libby, UT and Texas A&M are so crowded that it's really a pain in the butt to find any information out over the phone. Texas Tech was a lot easier to deal with on the phone, but of course they have a lot less students.

libby-that was great. Whatever happened to those film shorts with Claymation wrestling fights?
Pope vs UT Admissions Officer anyone?

hey libby,

i'm in the same position as you. i applied to 5 schools, heard and admitted from/to 4, and i know that ut is where i belong, undergrad or grad. the only good thing for me is that im out-of-state so i dont have hear about UT all the time...but hearing about UMCP all the time is equally annoying. good luck with admissions!

good luck to you too...AND EVERYONE ELSE.

On the bright side fellow non top 10%/out-of state students...TOMORROW IS MARCH. Which means we will atleast know by the end of the month...EEK scary. i think my status-checking is about to become obsessive...lol...:(

Wow, it IS March tommorrow. Back to Fiesta Mart for more prayer candles.

Good luck everyone.
