i love the campus/location of USD, and its size. It is also Catholic which I like and has a good liberal arts education. But, its not as well-known as USC and lacks diversity. the boy-girl ration is pretty uneven too. But, i got 17,000 a year so its way better cost wise.

i love the reputation and options at USC, and it has more of a college feel, but i do not like the central LA location, and size is a bit large, plus its so expenseive! but i have a hard time rejecting it b/c it is such a good school/hard to get into (21% accepted)

I like both USC and USD, and have known quite a few people that have attended both. $17k/year at USD makes it a pretty good deal actually. If money is an issue for you, you'll definitely want to take that into consideration. Each campus is very different. USD's is much, much nicer than USC's IMO. The overall education at USC is stronger than USD though. I don't think that the amount of diversity is a huge difference between the two. Both schools are fairly similar in the type of students who go there. I don't think that you could go wrong with either.

When in doubt, use U.S. News and World. The difference in ranking between USC (27) and USD (38) is like that between Harvard and Brown. I'm not going to say that prestige should be your only consideration, but there's a pretty big difference between the schools with respect to it.

Aristotle doesn't know the difference between UCSD and USD.

If you want to study liberal arts then I doubt that USC will offer a reasonably better education than USD. If you are interested in science or engineering or communications then Southern Cal obviously has an edge. As far as quality of life, there probably isn't a school better than USD. If you are interested in continuing your education then you better bet that $17000 a year will come in handy.

And didn't Torero basketball win its conference defeating ranked teams, unlike USC and its one hit wonders?

i think you are leaning toward usd. go with how you feel about the school, not about complicated us news rankings and statistics. both will give you a quality education. perhaps more opportunities will arise from usc because of its name, however i do not think you will become less of a success if you chose usd. congrats on the acceptances!

Dont worry about the area around USC; the stuff on campus there will keep you busy in every way you look for. People who bash the surrounding neighborhood of a school are usually looking for petty ways to put the school down. Show me a report showing USC students are attacked/raped more often that students of other schools, and Ill start paying attention to it.

I would go with USD because of the cost. Plus it seems you want diversity but are concerned about being in Central L.A. It doesn't get more diverse than that, but not everyone is comfortable with actual diversity then only say they want it. $17K times four is 68K that is ALOT of money. I would go to USD based on that.

"And didn't Torero basketball win its conference defeating ranked teams, unlike USC and its one hit wonders?"

Yeah, USD beat UConn in the first round of the NCAA Tourney on a buzzer beater.....it was a great game. Not to mention the Toreros beat ranked Gonzaga and St. Mary's, and they won at Kentucky.

well as of right now im undeclared, but im probabaly going to go into history or communications or journalism. thats one benefit of USC-they have a great communications/journalism school

Have you actually visited USC? Are you comfortable with living in an urban area? I myself was pleasantly surprised upon my first visit. I come from a rural area and was scared to death about going to visit 'SC as I'd heard horrible things. Keep in mind this was just a few short years after the riots. The neighborhood is really not as bad as people would have you believe.

My recommendation is to visit both schools and go with your gut. Don't place too much emphasis on rankings as you are choosing between two fine schools.

USD is like #107 in US News. USC is a much better school, but if other factors outweight the academic disparity between USC and USD, then I say go with USD and leave that USC spot for someone else.

I was accepted to USD, but I'm not going for several reasons. First of all, it didn't seem academically challenging enough. Secondly, it was a little to "California" for me, and I want a different experience in college than I had in high school. It might be a great choice for you, but it just wasn't for me...

Also, schools in San Diego are notorious for being party schools. Even thought USD is not, it might not look good to employers of graduate schools.

You guys worry way too much about an employer thinking a school has a party rep. Employers know almost everyone in college parties lol, they know its about the individual and not the school itsself. That being said, with USC's amazing alumni connection I'd choose USC if you plan to get a job after 4 years. If you like USD more and plan to go to grad school then you should definitely choose USD because in grad school admissions, the prestige of the school is not taken highly into consideration, it is what you do at that school ex. research, gpa, internships.
