I can't decide which Math Class I'm prepared to take

So here is a list of Math courses I can take:
<a href="http://i32.tinypic.com/33jmj5i.jpg%5B/url%5D">http://i32.tinypic.com/33jmj5i.jpg</a></p>

I'm currently enrolled for M408C, but I have only taken High School Pre-Calculus. I'm in it because I have the prerequisite score on the Math Level 1 test, but today was the first day of class and the professor showed us the syllabus of things that are assumed that we know already, and I haven't covered those since I haven't taken a Calculus course.

I'm considering Add/Dropping for another course, but I don't know which one I'm prepared to take. I did well in Pre-Cal, but I can't take this course because I haven't been taught the material required to take it.

I'm a freshman in Undergraduate Studies.

Reading the course description it looks like it’s just a regular calculus course. It even says introduction in the description

Her syllabus had stated this:

It will be assumed that you are familiar with this material.

2.1 The Tangent and Velocity Problems
2.2 The Limit of a Function
2.3 Calculating Limits Using the Limit Laws
2.4 The Precise Definition of a Limit (briefly)
2.5 Continuity
3.1 Derivatives and Rates of Change
3.2 The Derivative as a Function
3.2 Differentiation Formulas
3.4 Derivatives of Trigonometric Functions
3.5 The Chain Rule
3.6 Implicit Differentiation
3.7 Rates of Change in the Natural and Social Sciences

But I haven’t been taught some of that material. I don’t think I’m prepared to take this course.

What? Are you sure that is what you are supposed to know or what she is teaching? Because that is what my 408C class was about.

But if you only took pre-cal, calculus at UT can be brutal. It was really hard for me and my friends who never took calculus before, 408C, I mean. Depending on what math you are required to take, I’d take K and L to replace C if you are allowed to.

That is what her syllabus stated. She assigned some problems for homework as well, but I’m not very sure how to work them out. I tried Add/Dropping that class using the Unique number online, but it says it was unsuccessful because the class I want to add is closed even though it says it’s open (and not open; restricted) where you look for courses.

I think 408K would be a better choice for you. (Did an adviser tell you to register for 408C?)

Well our advisor showed us that list. But I assumed I should take that one as I had the prerequisite Math Level 1 score. But I haven’t taken Calculus in high school, so I don’t think I’ve learned what I should already know by now. She also showed us some problems that she said that if we can’t perform then we need work to do, and obviously I did not know how to do them.

I am taking M 408M and I think I made the wrong choice. From what it looks like, the pace is extremely slow. Almost too slow… take the accelerated one…

Your teacher seems hardcore. Mine assumed we stopped at pre-cal and it was still hard.

What math is required for your major?

I think a lot of people who take C D instead of K L M could have claimed credit for AP calc but decided not to or took AP calc and didn’t take the AP test/missed the AP test score needed for credit.

I got 88 on the ALEKS test, so I was placed in C, but I found difficulty working in calculus in high school…very difficult subject, so I am taking K.

You can still be put on the waitlist. Ignore the message where it says that the class is closed and then look above the course schedule and you can add the class and swap it.

As for math, Calc at UT is tough so I would take K and then L and maybe M if it is required.

Help is also available but I’d talk with the prof first and see what she says.

Good Luck!

Thank you everyone.

Who is ur prof?

the C D courses are usually for people with calc background. You might be better taking K L M. However you might be ok with C and D. I did not have a calc background and I took C and made an A. I also consider myself bad at math.

I took prof treisman, he helps you if you did not take calc in highschool, by giving you extra points and general help. His class is hard but he is a great teacher and really helps you. If you want to take C and D then maybe try getting into his class with effort you can definatly make an A. You can go see him and he might help you get into his class.
