I’m in my junior year of high school and have taken difficult classes, no at level classes, a few accelerated classes, but a majority of AP’s and honors classes throughout high school. My transcript contains all A’s except math. I was in the Honors level in math for Freshman and Sophomore year. First semester of freshman year, I got a B-, then the last three I have received C’s. My mother was very strict and wouldn’t let me drop the math courses. Finally, this year I moved down and received an A in math this semester. How will this affect colleges when they see my transcripts? My weighted GPA is about a 4.35. I took the ACT blind and got a 30, my goal is 34. How would my grades in math affect a colleges decision?
I think colleges will understand that not every subject will be one’s strong suit; they’ll understand and see that you’ve been trying to work through higher level math courses, especially because you tried to stick with it the first two years and because you excel at higher level courses in other subjects. This could also be a topic your guidance counselor could discuss in their recommendation letter: how you found it challenging but tried to stick with it, why you thought dropping down a level was best academically for you, etc. Getting Cs freshman and sophomore year then getting As junior year is definitely not going to severely restrict your college options very much (with the exception of Ivies, but then again even people with perfect transcripts and stats get rejected all the time). Don’t stress and good luck with the next few years and your college search!!
