So one of my common app draft is about how my background/ the way my parents raised me help shape my identity. It’s a sweet, well-written and interesting one, or at least that’s how others who read it told me. I like it too, but I think it’s not gonna set me apart from other applicants, so right now my main CA essay is about another unique EC.
Last time I applied ED to an Ivy League school, my private college counselor advised me to include that essay in the “additional comment” one. Although I do like that background essay, I was against this idea, since I think the additional section is only for explanation about disciplinary issues/ medical stuffs, or a dip in grades, or a sob story/ family issues; and the admission officer will be irritated if I make her read so much. ( I assume it’s “her” because the school’s regional admission officer for my state is a young woman)
My counselor did ask some of her friends, who had worked in admission in other schools before, and the reaction was 50/50. However, she said that I should still include that essay, because it captures my personality really well, and it’s a sweet and great essay so the adcom won’t be annoyed by it. I ended up listening to her, although I was still ambivalent about it.
Now, on second thought, would that extra essay seriously annoy the adcom, and affect my chances? It’s only 2 weeks before the decision comes out, so I’m just paranoid. Do you guys have any specific stories about something like this? Will the adcom see my whole application in a bad light because I made her read another 600 - word essay?
