I am 14 years old, turning 15 in a few months. Unfortunately, I don't have a cell phone, yet. All the kids in my class have a cell phone, besides me. One classmate said that is was sad that I am this old and still don't have a cell phone.

What do you think?
Any high schoolers out there who don't have a cell phone yet?
When did you get your first cellphone, if you do have one?

They are pretty useless, though. If you want to call someone from home, then you use the land line. If you need to get picked-up by your parents or something, just borrow someone else’s.

I think I was 12 when I got my first cellphone.

I currently hate the phone I have, iPhone - first gen, so it keeps freezing and acting crazy constantly. I’m always cursing at and throwing my cell at things…and people.

If you want one, buy one yourself, Wal-mart has those little prepaid phones that are pretty inexpensive.
Or ask your parents to get you one, however, your argument is going need to be stronger than “everyone else has one except me.” For my parents, it was more of a safety reason that I got mine, after my mother got in a car accident while I was in school and we had no way to reach each other.

I got one at age 12 and mostly just played with it like a toy. Most middle school kids just whip out cell phones to look cool. I’m now 18, though, and get a ton of practical use out of my blackberry. I use it for work and it’s paid for itself many times over.

As somebody mentioned, in middle school and early high school, cell phones are like a “cool” factor. Kids whip 'em out just to look cool.

I’ve had a cell phone since a very young age, because when my parents divorced, my dad wanted me to be able to contact him directly on my own without having to ask permission from my mom. So for me, having a cell phone isn’t a big deal. It’s just a tool (like a pen or a pencil) - use it when you need it.

It annoys the heck out of me when all of the freshman come into high school, flipping their phones around, discreetly texting during class, and trying to show off. It just makes them look silly, IMO.

I got my first one in the 6th grade, but didn’t use it regularly until the 7th or 8th grade, and it wasn’t an essential until high school, when I started using public transit.

I think cellphones are very important for emergency and other contact purposes. That being said, however, you don’t need the type most people have, with the weird keyboards, ringtones, and whatnot (cough iPhone cough); a simple cellphone will do.

Personally, I don’t know of any high-schoolers that don’t have a cellphone.

I think I got my first one at 12, but didn’t use it pretty much at all until 14.

Got my first cellphone in 6th grade. Started texting like crazy freshmen year. Actually just got a blackberry recently (had an iphone before).

@OP
And I’m guessing you’re a freshmen or sophomore? Don’t people at your school like text? Or BBM? I see freshmen on their phones all the damn time …

Wow, I’m 17 too. Never met anyone my age who doesn’t have a cellphone. Do you live on a farm or something? :)

I got my first phone when I was 15. Even though I have one now, I don’t use it, except when I need to be picked up from somewhere. I rarely text.

All of my friends call or text or both or listen to music or go online using their cell phone. In one 8th Grade project, most of kids in my class, including my friends, said their cell phone was their life and they can’t live without it. I guess I’m really out of it.

But my teacher became really furious, and pointed out those who compulsively used their cell phone, where the ones who had the lower grades in her class.

I believe I got my first one when I was 12.

It was when I had to start saying regularly after-school or go places for my EC’s. I don’t use it for much else.

I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. Most of the team, like others mentioned it’s simply to look cool by how many contacts you have and what not. I’m sure you can get by by borrowing though. For example, I know some people that are juniors and still don’t have cellphones and they’re doing quite well actually.

I didn’t get mine until I was 15. It’s funny: even after spending all those years in middle school wanting one really bad, I rarely use my cellphone. I guess it wasn’t a big deal when it happened.

Believe me, some of my friends, who had cell phones since middle school, are seriously addicted to it - so I guess, in my case, it’s nice having that level of self-control.

I got my first cell phone back n 7th grade when I was 12 so I could call my parents when they were on the road to pick me up from ECs and such. Before that, I used my friends’ cell phones, but for convenience I got one in case of some emergency. I barely texted until late into first quarter of this school year, and I only use my phone when I need it. I have a pretty basic flip phone, so I don’t care about looking cool.

@OP: Don’t worry! If you really must need one, get one of the Trac Fones (I think that’s what they’re called) like another poster suggested. I was going to get one of those, but my family decided to all get new phones at the same time, so I ended up getting one from Verizon. Good luck and don’t worry about not looking cool :)
