I’ll be starting at a community college soon, knocking out my general requirements, etc… I know what university I want to go to, but I dont know what to major in. Im leaning towards Political Science, English and Literature, Management Information Systems or Biology. Those are the majors I have on mind.
I get negative feedback about these majors, people say they’re not marketable in the job field, etc…
With the B.A in Political Science, I’d like to teach Political Science at the community college and university levels.
MIS is certainly a marketable degree. The others have value too, you just might not find a job that matches exactly to the degree. As society we have become very focused on getting a bachelor degree in a field you want to work in. And in many cases that is required (engineering, architecture, etc.). But it wasn’t always like that - people used to get degrees that interested them and then set out to make their mark on the world. So if something really interests you, go ahead and study it. Just be careful about your amount of debt if the degree isn’t aligned with a high-paying career.
As for teaching in a community college, in most cases a master degree would be required. Plus some experience in the field tends to help.
You can’t teach political science at the college level with a BA. Theoretically you can get a master’s (in political science, not education) but in reality, to be competitive you’d need a PhD in political science.
That said, you can get a job with all of the majors that you mentioned. It’s just that (with the exception of MIS) those jobs are all liberal arts majors that don’t lead directly into some kind of professional job or career. You have to be a little more creative and flexible with the kind of jobs that you pursue.
