I don't really care about politics. Should I go to American University?

I'm accepted to attend AU in Fall 2011. I'm a middle-class Asian, who is generally moderate (but slightly leaning to the right) and is from Virginia. However, while I'm socially and politically aware, I'm not passionate about it, nor do I wanna discuss about it extensively outside class. I hear that the stereotype in AU is Jewish, NY/NJ-based, liberal, upper-class, and white.

I want to major in International Studies with an Asian region concentration and double in Business. With Int'l Studies, I'm more interested in the cultural, language, and historical aspects rather than the politics.

Will I be left out if I decide to attend AU? Is AU a bad fit?

I really love the DC area, and I like the internship opportunities that AU is famous for. I've been rejected by GW already, and GT is definitely out of my reach. Considering I'm from VA, I have also GMU for a cheaper price. AU just seems like a better academic choice, but I don't wanna be socially miserable.

I should also add that I care alot about diversity, and while AU has a good reputation for having international students, I hear that it's generally homogenous, and considering I'm Asian, this goes back to my question about being left out. GMU seems to be more diverse.

Please reply. I'm really torn about college.

I’d post this question on the American U forum on this website.

I believe GWU has more of reputation for having high percentages of rich New York/New Jersey and Jewish students than AU.

You can read some data by finding the “Common Data Set” for American on a google search. It will tell you actual numbers of international students and asian undergrad students, for instance.

If I were you, I’d make the decision after you see the financial aid offers. You need to find out the net cost to decide which is worth your time and money.

Also, American has one of the highest percentages of female students among similar universities. That can be great or not so great, depending upon your perspective.

In the gym, there is a whole wall of championship banners for female sports teams, and a couple lonely banners for male sports on the other wall.

One of the advantages of AU over GMU is that AU will have more students living on campus and staying on campus on weekends.

I think you should go to AU. The international studies program is good and while it is definitely liberal it’s not intolerant of other ideologies.
