I Don't Think I'll Get Into Any College With THIS ACT Score.

It was my first and last time, and i got a 17! DIDNT EXPECT THIS AT ALL, and yes i'm crying my heart out ryte now.

uhh check out some schools that dont use sat/act for admissions, wake forest for example is top 30 in the nation and doesnt require scores, also the deadline is 1/15 so u got time.

why can’t you take it again?
if deadlines your problem, call schools and tell them your situation

Drew gives you the option of sending a graded essay instead. A while back someone posted a list of schools that don’t require standardized tests…if you do a search you should be able to find it.

And remember, schools look at a lot of other things…grades, rank, APs, extracurriculars, recommendations…

well it’s really kinda your fault for waiting untill the last chance to take it…each year, the ACT offers 6~7 tests, so…best of luck

tsh1226: You’re not really helping.

Do you have other scores? Perhaps from the SAT?
Remember, your grades and high school curriculum are more important than the ACT. Good luck!

No. You will not get into an ivy league with that score.
But you will get into A college/university.
Many decent state schools would be down with that score.

^Vertigo…really? even maybe if he/she is instate at some crappy college in North Dakota or something, but “decent state schools?” I really don’t think so. It’d be best to go to a cc then transfer because a 17 will get you into pretty much no schools worth going to. Pessimistic? Maybe, but realistic? Hell yeah

Decent is all relative…tsh1226. Okay…not everybody is going to score 99th-%ile. That’s what the 99th%-ile is. Really. Stop freaking out over this. Everybody, OP. With a 17 ACT composite…you can still do things. You can still be somebody and go to a good school. (Not that the two are necessarily related) But for God sakes, a score doesn’t define a human being.

ok I think it’d be better to tell the OP the realistic facts instead of trying to preserve his self-esteem right now because the cold hard truth is, a 17 is a bad, relatively that is, since a 17 is the bottom 25%, score. Telling him that he can still do things and be somebody and go to a good school sounds like some real BS right now. If that’s the case then what the hell are 2 millions students every year doing taking these tests that mean nothing? Bottom line is that the score is bad; find a realistic way for your future

Were you sick while taking it? I got a 16 on the PLAN if that makes you feel better–but I wasn’t taking it seriously :D

This site has a list of colleges that don’t require ACT/SAT scores for admission. Good Luck.

[Optional List | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List for Fall 2025 - Fairtest)

Ouch a 17 is horrible.

You could go to the university of Akron you only need a 16 to get into that college. i also hear that its a great college

I agree with tsh… better to be realistic. And a 17 is not that great. Retake, or look for a cc.

…To say that a 17 ACT prevents one from doing things and being somebody is patently ridiculous. I don’t dispute that most “good schools” probably won’t accept an applicant with this score, but it’s ridiculous to extend that to say that a person is a failure in life because of a failed ACT.

What is your GPA? If you got a high one colleges will accept you. However, don’t expect to get any scholarships.

Actually my score is so bad because i never thought of going to the US to study or anything…but recently i thought y not. I checked every colleges deadline, and it was around october, so i registered for the SAT an ACT, so their scores make it in time. I wa supposed to do SAT2’s on dec6 and the ACT on dec13, however, on the SAT 2 exam, I got sick that day (really sick), so i transfered to the next date (jan 24), and my father suffered a heart attack…so i didnt really concentrate on my studies or exam, and since i go to a school who hardly sends any kid to colleges in the US, no ones knows about these exams and stuff, but i wanted to try and study, but unfortunately i couldn’t control my emotions and did bad cuz of depression, I don’t wanna tell this to the admin offciers, cuz they’ll think i’m whining.

My GPA is a 3.78 , lots of ECS…gr8 recs…possibly good SAT 2’s and i’m an arab… =/
Will any of this help?

I hate these posts that blatantly say “a 17 is horrible”. Constructive criticism? Hello? Just because you go round getting your 99th percentile doesn’t mean you have to go round rubbing it in. It’s one thing being realistic, and it’s another thing being an a-hole.

FiSHO, if I were you, I would go ahead and tell the admissions officers. It’s an very viable reason to have your grades go down a bit. Your GPA and all are fine, and you have potential. Don’t worry about it. Just check out some colleges that don’t require standardized testing and you’re bound to get in somewhere.

^Sci-fry a 17 is 35-40 percentile, 33-36 is 99 percentile, why don’t you do some research before giving any advice, wow.
