i don't understand how you know

This may sound slightly random, possibly stupid, but when people post their stats here, they often write "essays were amazing" or "essays will be spectacular." But how do people know what makes a good essay? What in your views was amazing about them, if you were one of the people who said that? How do you know that your essay on teaching blind children from Bolivia basic karate moves was so incredible? Somebody please explain because I honestly don't understand.

same here! or on some online evaluator things, it says to rate your essay 1-10 scale. im like, how would i know? obviously, if i care about college, its going to be the best i think it can be, which is a 10.

I think because by the time everyone is done with their essay (even if they don't admit it) they know they put a lot of time in it. A lot of people associate a lot of time with excellence. This is not always true. Obviously, all the essays on here are not "amazing" "stellar" and I doubt all the teacher recs are as "one in a billion" as people describe sicne I see countless numbers of these said people get rejected and...they have the test/gpa numbers. Don't worry. ;-)

sorry about the double post ;-)

so basically, the only person fit to judge these things are adcoms

I agree lolli

I personally think I wrote killer essays. I will find out in April. Skilled writers who've read others' essays have an easier time telling.

but GoldShadow, unless you think something is excellent, why would you send it in? most people on this forum at least would strive for perfection, and even if their essay was awful, they themselves will claim it was amazing. otherwise they would have edited it and revised it until it was amazing.

Heh...my friend wrote his college essays in about half an hour the night before deadline and was just accepted EA to ND and BC (honors program).

Random little tidbit...

what does that have to do with anything?
