I don't understand, what are good ECs?

<p>on every thread I go, no matter what the person does outside of school, I constantly see "your ECs are not good enough." So, to clear it up, what are minimum ECs for a good school, lets say Columbia?</p>

<p>clubs-??
leadership-??
volunteering-??
work-??
academic (like a physics summer program, for example)-??</p>

<p>The only time I saw someone say that another person had good ECs was to a girl who published books. Do I really have to do something like that to elicit that response?</p>
