General Comments:
The thing that really gets me is that there doesn’t seem to be any consistency to the Accept/Defer/Reject decisions. Kids with great stats and ECs got rejected or deferred, kids with so-so stats and ECs got accepted, and vice versa. What are we all to make of this? How do the AdComs make their decisions? What is it that really counts? Sigh…Would be nice to know.

I completely agree with your last comment there, Mr. Amptron.

Zero consistency

It must be the essays and recs that really make a difference I think...

Hey, sorry to post my stats this late. I was busy with other things, and besides, I needed a couple of day to take in the reality before posting. Honestly, I'm still very shocked and still envisioned this as a dream....

*Decision: Accepted *

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: 2060 - 660V, 720M, 680W

[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: My history was pretty unique, and I guess that was my hook for getting in. I also participated in everything my small high school has to offer.
General Comments: I thought my scores were too low and thought maybe they would be my downfall. After I'd submitted my app, there were some unfortunate things that'd happened to me and my app that caused me a lot of anxiety and discouragement. For one, I took my SAT IIs (first time) on my senior trip to Cali and was sick when I took it. For another, my transcript wasn't sent until Nov. 28th. There were some others, but I don't wanna sound like a whiner because I should be happy right now. Congrats to everyone who got in. Good luck to all those who got deferred/rejected, hope you guys can bounce back and do an awesome job on your other apps.
I wanna make some friends here before I go to college, so let's get better acquainted!

I think it's all about the essays and what kind of person they think you are, honestly.

That's the first thing I thought about when I found out that I got accepted. They probably saw something good in my essays.
Interestingly, I thought my essays were junk at first, but I'm such a perfectionist with high standards that I think a lot of good stuffs are junk. So I guess my essays did work after all....

I am sure my recs got me in.

mine too probably because I go to a small school and I'm very close to my teachers.

I agree with gmman. They are looking for the personality within the application and the essays are where you show that you are more than just numbers.

bummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmp

Yes, stats are all over the place here, but I still say you can see patterns and trends. You can spot the auto admits ( those with stats high enough that hooks don't matter), as well as the diversity of students from various regions and backgrounds. It's all pretty fascinating, really.

For some people you can't tell what their hook is at all. It might have been something in their recs, background or essay, and might not be too obvious on first glance. But for the most part, I wasn't too surprised. Anyone else feel that way?

I don't know what to think...I think it's mostly the FEEL they get from your essays (which is much more important than what you say or how eloquently you say it). I think this is the #1 thing, much more important than recs - both of my teachers told me the rec they wrote for me was significantly better than the rec they wrote for any other student but that didn't seem to matter.

And collegecountdown, there are no "auto admits" based on stats - I think there was a greater % of people on this board rejected w/ 2300+ than 2100-2200.

Oh, and you guys that think your essays got you in...

I had really high stats, etc. so presumably my essays kept me out. Would you mind trading essays via PM to help me see where you guys went right & I went wrong?

there has to be some consistency. An admissions officer won't just reject a higher score for a lower score for no reason. This is proof that a SAT score will not get you into college. It's a mix of GPA, class difficulty, ECs, leadership, and the list goes on.

And with the info that kids posted, you just can't tell how passionate a person is about his/her ECs and how strong they are in that area... You have to be with them in their real lives to know how much time they put into each of their activities...

I'm also getting the feeling that they place more importance on the subjective part of the application, like your personality, motivation, and interests, rather than on cold hard numbers. And I think this is very positive because I personally don't believe SATs are an accurate measure of intelligence or ability. I only took the test once and got a 2080 which was "awesome" among my friends but is quite below average in CC. Still, I didn't take the test again, I just focused on other parts of the application and I guess it paid off-- I got in! :)
