I dun goofed...chances?

Well, I'd say I completely messed up high school and my junior year (about to enter semester two). But perhaps all hope is not lost? This issue is seriously depressing me; I'd like to get in to a semi-reputable school, though I don't know if such is possible with my current grades and activities. Let me share.

GRADES (AP classes in my school reflect as a grade-up in GPA-for example, while the letter grade is a C, it will be reflected as a B in terms of how it adds up-the AP grades I've added are the grades that are written on the physical report card)

Ninth, semester one:

Computer Applications (required at my school, it counts as business, it teaches how to type more quickly, how to work with Word and Excel, etc.): C
English 9: B
Chinese I: C+
Advanced Algebra I (honor's class): C-
Geophysical Science: C-
World History: B+

Ninth, semester two:

English 9: B
Chinese I: B+
Advanced Algebra I (honor's class): D+
Health: A+
Geophysical Science: B
World History: A-

Note that I tested out of U.S. History in ninth grade by passing the final with about 88%. U.S. History or AP U.S. History is a required class at my school, the two almost always taken as a sophomore.

Tenth, semester one:

American Literature/Writing: B+
Chinese II: B-
Geometry: A-
Biology I: A-
American Media Studies: A+
AP Microeconomics: C

Tenth, semester two:

American Literature/Writing: B+
Chinese II: C
Creative Foods & Nutrition (visual art is required as a credit at my school, this class satisfies the requirement-also offers half a math credit): B
Geometry: B-
Biology I: B
AP Macroeconomics: C+

While I haven't yet finished semester one of eleventh and I still haven't taken finals, it looks like it's going to stack up as:

AP U.S. Government: B-
Algebra II w/ Trig (three Algebra 2 classes at my school-in order of difficulty, Algebra 2, Algebra 2 w/ Trig and Honor's Algebra 2 w/ Trig; also, I plan to retake semester one in summer school, as my counselors don't record that I took summer school and instead just replace the grade): D-
Accounting: C+
Chinese III: C+
Chemistry (three levels of chem at my school-in order of difficulty, Chemistry in the Community, Chemistry, AP Chemistry; I may retake this during semester one of next year): D-
AP English Literature: Anywhere from a C to a C+

GPA

S1 ninth: 2.3333
S2 ninth: 3.0000
S1 tenth: 3.5000
S2 tenth: 2.8333
Cumulative GPA: 2.9167

SCHOOL DETAILS

My school features about 6,500 students spread across in three schools on one campus. Students often walk between the schools during passing time (ten minutes, to reflect how close the schools are, though we still walk outside) for classes in other schools but still have a 'home school' that they compete for in athletics, get their diploma from, go to pep rallies for, have administrators in, etc.

Class ranking: I am currently 840 out of 1,499.

STANDARDIZED TESTS

I got a 27 on an ACT test that I took last year. Not trying to say that such a score is good or anything-ACT tests are usually taken by juniors in my area and I'm hoping that I've improved since and may be able to increase my score.

EXTRACURRICULARS

Radio station-One of five directors on school's radio station. Radio station has about a twenty-mile radius and about thirty-two students serving on the staff. I have been a member since sophomore year.

Model UN-First year, looking to be chair of the club by next year. I received an award at my first large conference (University of Michigan United Model Nations).

Interact Club-On/off member since sophomore year. The meetings are generally 'come and go as you please'. The club is sponsored by the local Rotary Club and volunteers at various venues.

Wrestling-Freshman year only. Some kids came down with MRSA and I didn't really want to deal with that, so I decided not to join the team sophomore year and I didn't want to start on the team again as a senior. I was on JV.

I plan to join some more clubs by next semester senior year, though I just don't want schools to think that I'm joining last-minute to get in to school easier.

WORK/VOLUNTEER DETAILS

I work at McDonald's. I have about fifteen hours of community service (very low, I know), most of which coming from Salvation Army bell-ringing and making blankets for the homeless.

PERSONAL DETAILS

I am of European origin and I am ethnically Jewish, though I'm an agnostic. I live with only my father. Besides my sister, whom is attending a very small/low-ranked community college and my father, whom attended a community college for two years, no one in my family (includes my cousins, aunts, uncles, etc.) has been to a university or college. The income level of my household is about $90,000 annually.

I was hoping to attend UMich before going in to high school, but I blew that right out of the water. I got a 27 on an ACT test last year

Guys, I know that these grades are horrible. I'm not proud of myself and I've taken enough flak as it as from myself to want anymore. Please have constructive criticism and/or suggestions? :)

I would like to add that I am hoping to be admitted to (may someone please indicate whether I’m a reach or not?):

1.) MSU (I’d say that highest on my list)
2.) Western Michigan University
3.) Central Michigan University

Bump! Please?

hmmm, are you a junior or a senior? B/c if you have outstanding senior year grades it could help. Also, are you planning on taking the SAT?

also please answer mine? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1450181-important-do-i-need-buff-up-my-ecs-get-into-unc-ch.html

I say try to keep those SAT/ACT scores up to balance out the GPA! Good luck!

Does your district allow you to retake classes online or in summer school to bring up a low grade? Maybe you could redo one or both of the algebra classes in which you got poor grades. My daughter retook Algebra 2 online over the summer and not only did it bring up her grade, but it also helped her a LOT on her math SAT because it was all fresh in her mind when she retook the test in October of her junior year (She went from a 470 in math to a 620). She has gotten into schools in our state which are the equivalent of the schools you’re trying for in Michigan (meaning respectable but not top tier schools, University of South Florida and University of Central Florida – she might have been able to get into FSU, but she didn’t apply). Ask about it.

Also, what is going on with your English grade this year? Try to do better next semester. You did well the other years. Next year, don’t take AP unless you think you can get at least a B. Better to take honors and do well. I think colleges kind of understand if someone is better at math or better at English, but if you do poorly in both, that’s more of a problem.

@glamwriter I’ll answer your’s ASAP! Thanks so much for the response! I’m a junior.

@Alex23 I can take summer school and they’ll replace the grade. The trouble with summer school is that my school operates it for about a month, with each class dedicated three hours (so you can only take two semesters of w/e you want to take). Chemistry is not available and I’m not aware if Algebra II w/ Trig is or not.

And I agree with the English statement. The course load was relatively light in my other classes, but this grade was brought down by a heavy amount of active reading (honestly, it IS my fault that I didn’t read/actively read them, I’ll admit that) that didn’t mix so well with so much homework from AP Gov. But thank you so much for the help-your advice regarding your daughter was very helpful. I’ll talk to my counselor immediately.

Yes, talk to your counselor, that’s a great idea. One thing for sure is that colleges like to see improvement. Are you deciding on early action or a regular deadline for college?

I’m planning on a regular deadline, as I want my application to be as ‘fresh’ as possible-as in how much improvement I may factor in to my app.

Yeah, i wholeheartedly agree with you. That’s what i am planning on too. I see that you are of European ethnicity, as am i! and what classes are you taking next year?
