At first, I thought college would be easy seeing that I have gotten a 3.98 in Highschool. At first, I didn’t try my hardest and failed a couple of the first test and I cried. Eventually, I worked my ass off and got a 2.7.I made relationships with my teachers, I went to office hours and got as much help as I could get, I had dozens of tutors, I tried to do all the homework, and I always asked questions in class.I’m so disappointed in myself and I just can’t stop crying. I have never had a C in my life and I have three of them… What should I do?
Not unusual to bomb first semester. Many do. Have you identified what the problem is? Many high achieving students realize college js the first time they truly have to work hard and study. Go to the library and away from dorm to study. Attend class. Many profs will drop a test, bump up a grade and other benefits just for having perfect attendance. Tutors are good as are establishing rapport with professors.
Most schools if you are on scholarship will have a semester or two of academic probation. Let that be your motivator. Having one semester under your belt you know what to expect. The Dean of my son’s school always shares he made a 1.9 GPA his first semester!
Believe in yourself. This is recoverable.
I agree. I was a straight A+ student in high school - valedictorian. The only B I had ever gotten was in 5th grade! Then I got to college and on my very first exam got a 45!!! I pulled out a C in that course. I was devastated. I had done everything “right” as you had. But I just kept working hard and ended up graduating with high honors, in engineering. So don’t despair! Hang in there.
A 2.7 isn’t “failing,” by the way. You can bring that up!
