I feel hopeless. Do you think I can get in?

I'm a Senior at George Walton High School in GA, ranked 109 in the nation.
I sort of screwed up freshman year with mixed up priorities and my mom's cancer.
But I've been trying so hard now.

I have a dream to go to NYU or UNC Chapel Hill. I was accepted to Alabama and Auburn. Other schools I am applying to are UT Austin, Emory and Oxford at Emory, Univ. of South Carolina, UMiami, Vanderbilt.

What do you guys think?

UT Austin: 70%
Emory: 65%
Oxford at Emory: 50%
Univ. of South Carolina: 80%
UMiami:70%
Vanderbilt: 75%

Thanks a ton…what do you think about NYU or Chapel Hill? That seems so optimistic though. I know they take on a holistic approach…but God I’m so scared.

I would say UNC is probably easier to get into then NYU…

Go for both and see what they say.

(can you do my chances thread?)

it definitely see that you’re trying
I just got into a similar situation with my mom, I found out she had cancer a few days ago and its completely thrown me off balance. I can’t think anymore…
I think if you explain your situation you might have a 50/50 chance of getting into NYU. Im not sure about UNC.
Can I ask you a personal question though?
How did you handle the whole thing with you mom? I’m just numb at this point and I need some insight.

small world, I live in Norcross (sorry for spam)

Yeah, I know NYU would appreciate my explanation.
I am really, really sorry to hear that. I didn’t take it too well but my mom’s the type who’s always optimistic about everything. She had a smile on her face even when she was in pain. I’m super emotional like my dad, so it was tough. My grades started dropping and my social/love life was getting in the way of my priorities. But it is the one year I regret the most. So, as difficult as it is, you should take every ounce of motivation you can get to get through it. Be there for your mom but don’t forget that she would want you to do the best for yourself, ok? And faith goes a long way.

I would say that nyu would be higher than chapel hill. You definitely have a punchers chance at both. I would say just express your desire to go there and be real with the admissions process. Good luck!

What I would suggest for bigwigs like NYU and UNC would be to show an upward trend in your grades to strengthen your chances. If you cannot take the SATs again, don’t worry about it. If you can show some commitment to ECs, write some compelling essays, and receive some insightful recommendations, you will be fine :-). Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/816473-chance-aa-female-elite-schools-updated-stats.html</a> <–Include Yale also!

u likely wont get into vandy or emory but the others u have a shot at

ah thanks…! keep them coming, and I’ll be sure to chance everyone back!

I really appreciate your advice. I’m in a really rough spot right wow, and Ill definitley take your advice with that.
Good luck with admissions :)

NYU- reach, but you really never know! I’m an optimist, but I’d say you should apply to NYU and you write a really stellar essay.
UNC Chapel Hill- I have no idea.
Alabama- Congrats! :]
Auburn- Another congratulations!
UT Austin- I have no idea
Emory- reach
Oxford at Emory- not totally sure
Univ. of South Carolina- I say you have a fair shot!
