Here’s the backstory:
I’ve moved twice in high school, once at the end of my sophomore year from California to Texas and once at the end of junior year (3 months ago), 5 hours away from my previous house. The first transition from California to Texas was really rough. And then, on top of that, during the first semester of my junior year – around November – I became ill and missed too many days of school; the school refused to let me make up the days or give me credits despite my legitimate doctor’s notes and notes from the hospital. Therefore I had no other choice than to drop out of public school and enroll in online school. I had to start the entire school year over to earn the basic credits I needed to pass. So, while everyone is starting their senior year in a few weeks, I’ll be rushing to get my junior year completed. My overall unweighted GPA is a 3.4. I have no “real” extracurriculars (never been involved in clubs at school, don’t play sports, etc.), but I did volunteer quite a bit in my freshman and sophomore years. I haven’t taken my SAT’s yet but I will coming up in October and again in November. My PSAT score was around a 1500. I’m planning to take AP Psych once I get done with junior year, but I know that won’t be enough.
I’ve basically lost all hope because no one wants a student who has no extracurriculars, a sucky GPA, and what I’m assuming is going to be a pretty average SAT score, right? And then there’s the online school factor that many colleges are biased about. I honestly don’t know where to apply because all of the colleges with good linguistics programs are totally out of my reach.
Will you be returning to school for junior year? Even if you remain home schooled of course there are schools that will accept you with a 3.4 (B+) average. There is so much talk on College Confidential about 5.0 weighted GPA’s and entry to Ivy League schools it’s easy to get a slanted view. 3.4 is very good. I don’t know Texas schools but you’d have potential to get in to about half of my state schools. There is a search tool on the front page of College Confidential. Try it. If you go to a college that’s not exactly a perfect fit you can transfer after two years of good grades. The new school will not consider high school grades or ACT/SAT scores.
I hope your health has returned and you can find the interest and strength to finish junior and senior year. College is so much better. Good luck!
Haha like Osprey said, don’t let CC confuse you. Your stats are perfectly fine. Are you getting in to Georgetown? Nah, but to say that no college will accept you? Even more ridiculous. There are plenty of schools that would admit you, you just have to look and keep an open mind.
