I feel like such a failure! please help me!

Please help me!
Freshman and Sophomore year I was kind of slacking off. I managed to squeeze out a 3.4 for those two years. And I told my self that now I’m a junior I really need to focus and pull up my gpa. Well.. that didn’t go so well. For the first and second marking period I got a 3.0 gpa and its really bad. I know. I am so mad at my self that I slacked off so much. So I calculated and figured out that if I get a 4.3 gpa (my school goes by 4.3 scale which is equivalent to 97%+) for the rest of the year, including my final, then I can leave junior year with a 3.7 (which is an A-). But by the time I apply for college I would only have a 3.5 overall. I plan to try to get a 4.3 senior year as well so that would bring up hs gpa up to a 3.7 but when I apply to college which will be in the fall of senior year my gpa will only be a 3.5 AT BEST. And I know a 3.5 is a really crappy gpa compared to everyone else and I was hoping to apply to University of Florida but that seems like a hard reach for me now.. =(

The problem with me is that I get VERY easily distracted. I watch a lot of videos on youtube, and I watch all my shows online and I spend a lot of time online just wasting time which is horrible and I hate my self for it. So how do I discipline myself? I want to make school my everything for the next year and a half. I want to study and try to get at least a 97%+ on everything! My classmates make it look so easy but I am like desperately failing at everything! Plus I also have to study for the SATs which I am hoping to score over 2000. My ultimate goal is 2220.
So how to I focus. How do I stop slacking off. How do I make work and studying enjoyable! Please help!!

Oh btw freshman sophomore year I took a mix of advanced and honors/pre-ib classes and now Im in the IB program so that gives you a background of my work load.

Even though I don’t hang out with friends outside of school (I have a lot of casual friends but I really don’t care to hang out with them) so most of the time I stay home but when Im not at home I am either at swim practice, dance, piano, working, volunteering, and fundraising for school events so on my resume it shows that I actually do something after school rather than just sit on the couch.

So please help me. Do you have any tips or tricks on focusing and succeeding at school??
Please help!
Thank you!

its weird. because i am ambitious in my mind. I want to get good grades, i want to succeed, i want to get into University of Florida, graduate top of my class, score well on the lsats, go to columbia or harvard law and become a lawyer.
But when it comes to actually studying i just can’t get my self to do it and i hate myself.
any motivation tips?? pleasee?

if you don’t study you won’t become a lawyer. simple as that…i don’t know what else to say.

Remind yourself of your goals, but a healty amount - don’t make yourself feel worthless. You have a healthy amount of EC’s which could counteract your GPA (which isn’t that bad!) You must be realistic in terms of bringing up your GPA, or be very disciplined. Every time you log onto a video site, remember your goals and how they are standing in your way. Have time for yourself, when you don’t have hw and on the weekends reward yourself. Do not feel guilty about self-time (I do and its horrible). Do the SAT q of the day and get a sense of your strengths/weaknesses. Focus most of your time on those, but also spend time to polish your strengths. If you need anything PM me. Hope I helped

You have to just put your head down and work really hard. There’s a difference between “planning to” do something and actually executing it. As you said, it didn’t work out for you this first semester, when you said you would focus and pull up your GPA. However, if you care that much about your future, then do everything so that your grades aren’t in any jeopardy. Put in a good amount effort into homework and studying, and, as hard as it might seem, just eliminate all distractions. Once you complete all your work, you can spend all the time in the world watching videos and all that other stuff. Just buckle down and work hard, and just remember that you can reap the benefits of hard work by watching all those videos and other fun stuff AFTER you complete the work! Good luck. :)

STUDY anywhere there is no computer, TV, cell phone, I pod, or land line. Find a place (everyday) where there is quiet and zero distractions. Make studying a priority! Don’t try and get your work done in areas of your home where you’ll be tempted to chat on line, search the net, check Facebook or play computer games. Think of studying as your job. Get your job done first (complete all of your home work and put in a good amount of study hours) and then you’ll be free to enjoy your leisure time. Consider studying at the Library whenever possible. Remove any/all other distractions from your homework/study time.

You can do it !!!

Best of luck.

a lot of times my hw is based on research or going online to do it.
writing esays, etc.
and then i go on fb to ask people in my class if they have done the assignment, how exactly we are suppose to do the assignment. etc.

Sounds like you aren’t yet committed to separating yourself from the distractions. I’ll bet you could do all the facebook you need in one 30 minute sitting and be done with it. You have a goal, but you need to reach for it.

Sign up someone to help you, like a parent or good friend. Tell them your goals and the rules you are trying to live by. You’ll need encouragement and support. They’ll need to be committed to helping you too–when you push back and complain, they need to push back too and remind you of what’s at stake. Sign up someone to help. Good luck.

focus on one goal at a time not the whole package which will distract anyone…because it is too big to accomplish and you get anxious thinking the whole goal has to be accomplished at once…stick to one goal…like staying focused on High school. If you know you waste time on the internet admit it and avoid the net if you have to study online…set a timer for automatic shut off after a certain time. block sites or have your parents block sites with a parental control program and use the computer for just studying.
but really, I think you are being overwhelmed by all your goals. Have one…getting good grades for high school. That’s the first one. the rest of your goals will follow.

I have that same problem, so I sympathize with you! I’ve been trying to raise my gpa to a 3.8 by senior year, but all these distractions have been getting in the way. I’ve been talking to teachers though, and along with my own solutions, I’ve come up with a way to stop getting so distracted.

First, come up with a list of long term goals. This list will remind you of what you’re trying to achieve and will dissuade you from giving up when you get that useless assignment that you hate doing. I know that feeling; I’m like “AUUUGH THIS IS SO USELESS I DON’T WANNA DO THIS” but then I remember if I don’t, I’ll never get to where I want.

Second, come up with a list of short term goals. Weekly lists and daily to-do lists help, especially when you carry them around with you because they depress you when you’re about to get distracted. Estimate the amount of time it will take for you to do the assignment and give yourself a deadline. Try not to let yourself go past it and keep looking at the clock and not facebook.

Ask your friends how far they are on longer assignments and how long it took them to do them. If you’re competitive, and they’re fast, they’ll motivate you to not slack off as you depress yourself over your inferiority.

filmalife was right about putting a block on certain websites. Firefox has an extension that allows you to block websites. I think Internet Explorer allows you to do that as well.

Finally, for computer assignments, come up with a list of stuff you have to do on the internet or preliminary research so that you can strictly follow a guideline. It’s better to look for a specific thing you need than look on Wikipedia for a general idea, focus in on a confusing topic, and get lost in the links.

I feel like I forgot something, but this post is long enough so I’ll stop here. I hope it helps!

An idea about getting distracted by the Internet while doing school work on the computer: try making a log in/user on your computer reserved just for school work. On that log in block Facebook and any other distracting websites you might go on. Ask your parents to make the passwords to unblock so you don’t know them. Then, whenever you do school work, only use that log in. You should know how to do the assignment before you start, so you don’t need to go on fb at all.

Turn off your computer when doing your homework. There are some sites were you can put in the website url and it will not allow you to go to that site for a period of time you determine.
OR
You can go the easy way and just work hard, get all of your work done and then relax. You might want to do you homework at the school or public library. Learn study skills now before you get to UF, otherwise Harvard Law will be out of the question.

Maybe your distracted because highschool is so pointless and the skills you need to become a lawyer are not related/ not even practiced in the American public school system.

Just a thought.

Second semester senior ftw

i agree with you. haha. the only thing that im actually interested in class was my American legal systems class, public speaking, and history…

also is it weird that i am interested in MIT and Yale Open notes. I download any course notes that interest me and just read them…

like i have an interest in learning. but none what so ever when it comes to taking tests and such.

i’m just in freshman year, but the courseload in our school is pretty intense. My strategy is doing EC’s and other productive stuff until 8 and then doing homework, because I work fairly well under pressure and I think EC’s are fun. Might not work for me, but nearly got me a 4.0 GPA in semester 1 (stupid english grade dropped last second). Anyhow, I wish you the best of luck.
