I'm not sure if my post is in the right forum or not, but here I go. Okay, to begin with I am in community college right now and am anticipating to transfer during 2014-2015. Okay, well right now it's my second semester and because I earned a high GPA I was added onto my school's honor list and the school suggested I join the Alpha Gamma Sigma. Apparently, it's the California Community College Honor Society (if you have more information, please let me know). Well, I decided to go ahead and join it because in high school I wasn't very social or active, I guess you could say. I only joined one club and even then I didn't have much responsibility towards it; I just attended the meetings. So I decided that this was my chance to actually be active in school outside of the classroom. Okay, well to maintain membership I have to earn 30 points and I get those from volunteer work. This is my problem. Now, remember I haven't had experienced with this kind of stuff so I can't help but feel overwhelmed. It's almost scary to think that I am an actual member of a club and that I have to earn my placement. Like it's whole new set of responsibilities and although I love the challenge, I'm also intimidated. Also, I'm pre-med so I also joined a club that focuses on that. So there's another responsibility. Basically, how can I learn to juggle all these new responsibilities with school, and possibly a job, given the little to no experience I have? Thanks in advance!!

I’m not a member of AGS but I have friends in it and it seems like a good honor society. I never heard of a requirement to do community service; that sounds absurd. I believe at my cc it is just recommended to do it if you want to write about in your transcript or get scholarships. They can’t force you, but I may be wrong.

And even if it is required, calm down; it’s probably not a big deal. Just go to whatever your club is doing; spend a weekend helping kids or giving out supplies. Not hard work. You['re a grown person and managing a little club with school isn’t a big deal. The real world has way harder challenges. It isn’t scary.

Yea I hated the community service requirement (of senior beta club in HS). I only had two places I could go to get credit (habitat for humanity and salvation army) since I was a minor. My experience was boring and the people weren’t friendly, so it sucked. Hopefully since you’re in California your experience will be different.
