PLEASE dont overlook this thread and HELP ME!

im still in high school and i need some advise from someone who knows what they're talking about. Basically, i am really scared over my ECs.

Im a:

Environmental Club member
Key Club member
Sisters on the Right Path member
Varsity Diving Team
JV Lacrosse Team
H.O.S.T. Program (hosting new students to make them feel welcome)
Organizer of this Fundraiser every year

I think that Admissions will think that i have no leadership skills because im not Vice President or Treasurer of any club. I cant hold any high positions in clubs because of my sports practices. No one is going to elect someone who cannot be there everytime. Does it really matter if im the president of some club?

thank you so much for reading

btw the school i want to get into is highly selective (nyu to be exact)

Organizing the fundraiser is a leadership position!

In addition, colleges know that the officerships are largely based on social popularity and not merit, so don't be worried about them, though they are a plus.

I only learned I was going to be the secretary of Young Democrats at my school after my applications were in, so now I'm ticked off at the organizer/founder of the club.

could u possibly also become captain of ur sports team?? that is an impressive leadership position as well

you should be fine.

I agree that it's just not necessary to be a club officer. If you're concerned about leadership, one thing you could do is think of a special project for one of your clubs, organize and help implement it. For example, if there is something extra you think it would be good for Host Club to do for new students, or if maybe Sisters on the Right Path wants to organize something to help younger girls, or even if some of you on the Lacrosse team wanted to go to the YMCA or the Girls' Club to teach some younger girls how to play the game, especially if you did this for a couple of years in a row so you created an ongoing program, not only would it help others, but in terms of your EC's, I think it would be even better than being elected to a position the importance of which is not clear.

You don't have to be a leader to be accepted into a university. I think that's a common misconception. I talked to a Dean of Admission (Vandy) and she said that if everyone's a leader, who's to be the follower?

Maybe elaborate on one the events you lead for a club such as organising the fundraiser in the short answers? The NYU application had alot of short answers. Maybe you can show how you lead the fundraising.

thanks alot for the advice. im gonna look into that

I got into NYU with a big scholarship without any leadership activities. Granted, that was... four years ago, so standards may have risen. Regardless, I think you're over-reacting. :)

Are you good enough to be recruited for diving?

I got into Tisch for acting (today!), and the only leadership positions I hold are president of the Improv club and one of the freshmen peer leaders. I am NOT the president of the drama society.
I think that NYU cares more about what you do for a club than the position you hold. If you can show that you are involved, they will appreciate it. Definitely explain the sports conflict in the additional information section!

You (the OP) know, the syntax of this thread's title implies that you do not, in fact, want people helping you.
