I got a B and I'm so upset

Hey, I’m a freshman student and it’s been a tough journey as the semester ends. Today, I saw my penultimate grade for my microbiology and I have 86% which is a B and then in order to get an A, I need to get 109 points but we only have 100 points for our final exam so I’m probaby going to get a B. I feel so disappointed because it’s so close and I studied well for that class :’( Idk what to do :’( Im thinking of applying to nursing school but I just feel so uninspired right now :frowning:

Honestly, you’re fine. I get the feeling of being a lifelong straight A student but that almost always changes for people in college. The high school A is not the same as a college A - you need to not only do all the work, but really go above and beyond a higher level. Your life will not be significantly affected by one B and you’ll be over it soon.

I just feel really disappointed because it is close to A :’((((( A lot of people told me I can’t get into nursing school with a B and Im crying so hard right now. It’s my first semester of my Freshan year and I dont know if I still wanna continue…

STEM courses in college are generally tough and are often graded harshly. At this point I would study hard and see if you can get the grade up to a B+ or something. If you really want to be a nurse then keep moving along that path – if one B is enough to get you knocked off track, then maybe reconsider if nursing is what you really want.

So it’s not true that I can’t apply to nursing school with a B in microbiology?

You can apply to nursing school with a B. Your life isn’t over and your head won’t blow off just because you earned a B. A B is a solid grade.

You are not alone in having to readjust expectations regarding grades. There a lot of kids out there with straight A high school resumes getting B’s (and worse) for the first time in their lives. My DD is one such kid. It is not an automatic indication of failure or poor academic fit - college is just tougher. Remember: college is a marathon, not a sprint. Your GPA will even out over time if you keep working hard and working smart.

Yes, it’s a killer to be so close to the prize but not actually get it. And I bet you will do something a little different next time to keep it from being such a close thing. Learning!

You have not earned a B yet. Its possible for the grade to go up or down from where you are now. How? Well bomb the final and I would imagine that a C would be possible. Get a great grade on the final and you might earn an A. Although your math says that you need a 109% on the final, its possible that a grading curve might be in effect for the entire semester. Many professors will not curve individual exams but do curve on the course grades. Some professors don’t really advertise that they curve but I assure you that many do. How much of a curve (and in fact if there is a curve) may not be known until after the final. So take the opportunity to study hard and see what happens.

Hi, I finished my final exam… I got 100/100 but I’ haven’t seen my final grade yet… I doubt it’s gonna be an A tho since I didn’t reach 9 more points :frowning: I guess I just have to try harder nsxt time ::confused:

You are in college and you got a B. Great job:-) Stop being dramatic. You will probably get another B before you finish.

I just want to point out that you got 100/100 on a final exam. That’s incredible! You channeled your energy and did so well. Keep that up next semester and beyond, and you will do great. Just hang in there.

This isn’t high school. A B in college, especially a difficult class is considered a good grade. It’s a solid B anyway, not like you had an 89.5% or something like that right on the fence.

Keep in mind curves do happen.

A B is not going to derail you from nursing school. However, I would do a lot of soul searching and make sure nursing is the right career for you. Nursing is hard, stressful, and sometimes you make mistakes. If you cry over a B, I’m not sure this is the career path for you.

Maybe it’s a one-time thing and you’ll mature as you realize that this isn’t the end of the world. If it doesn’t though, I’d reconsider.

(I say as someone who spends a LOT of time around nurses and sometimes my life is literally in their hands. We, as patients, need our nurses to be people people who can keep calm under pressure.)

Agreed, a B is fine. Albeit a while ago, my mom got into nursing school with a B. Just keep up your grades from now on. I remember my first A- in college. I was disappointed, yes, but at least I no longer had the pressure to keep up a 4.0.

^With regards to this being the right career, being a perfectionist is a good thing for a nurse to be. I know few others that top my mom in that regard, and it makes her an excellent nurse. If someone is dispensing meds to you, do you want them to be a perfectionist that double checks and hates to make mistakes, or someone who’s cool with whatever and isn’t worried if you get a little extra? Although it is a good point that a nurse needs to learn to cope with stress and appear calm for a patient. Even then, there are many types of nursing, and some are more stressful than others.
