I got a handwritten postcard from Northwestern?

Hi everyone,

Over the weekend, I received a handwritten postcard from Northwestern, congratulating me on being named a National Achievement Semifinalist. I've gotten a lot mail from them in the past, including an e-mail offering to waive my application fee, but this is the first time I've ever gotten something so personal. Do you think that it means anything? I wasn't going to apply but now I'm thinking about it, and I don't want to waste my time if I don't have a real shot.

Thanks! :)

The personal touch means nothing. They are impressed with your PSAT score and want you to stay interested in them, but they also sent the same card to everyone else who is a NASF. To know if you have a shot, do the usual research into SAT/ACT scores and GPA.

While a very nice touch, it’s still marketing. This article in today’s Washington Post ties in with your experience.

As mentioned above, do your own research into Northwestern; see where you stack up against previously admittted students. Run the NPC, and go from there.
